Small point, but the tax rate is currently 20%, decreasing to 19% next year.

The dividend is 5cents per quarter Less 21 per cent withholding tax the residue in sterling is 25 per cent less. the dividend has been savagely cut. Now much depends on politics in Spain. In the December elections will we get a PSO / Podemus coalition or will it be PP / Cuidanos . if the leftists win and Spanish mortgages cost more there will be more repossessions - not good for banks. unemployment is very high in Spain -how much longer will they put up with it and stay in the stay in the euro ? Well if it gets even cheaper and cheaper they will do fine but the value of your Santander shares would not look good. maybe pray for a silver lining. Lots of foreign property buyers looking for a place in the sun and oblivious to electricity bills and Inheritance Tax ! I don't keep these for now.

Note there is a 20% Spanish Witholding Tax taken from SAN dividends. This reduces to 19% next year. Previously you could avoid this tax by taking the scrip dividend option, but the scrip dividend scheme is ending.

Tempted back in today. Low end of the upward trading channel. Q1 update positive with revenue growth increasing across it's main markets. A very much underrated stock with better than average ratios for the sector.
