All looking very positive. HS2 go-ahead providing a big sentiment boost ... which makes sense

So let's say around £20-£30 million on pre tax. With the rumoured huge cost overruns on HS2, would hope their bidding process has been watertight and they are not on the hook for any additional costs?.

Yes that's true, think there was at least some anticipation in advance though, reflected in the multi month share price rise.

i'm out at £2.68 as of 23rd Dec. with 14.3% gain ex. fees. in just over 6 months, thanks to a good trading update and a Boris bounce. Still probably one of the best in sector, but the low margin high risk work means a low p/e is the norm imho. Also i was slightly concerned about execution risk on (a) that midland met hospital (who knows what structural nasties Carillion and a whole year of the elements may have left?) and (b) HS2 if it goes ahead, just because the whole thing seems jinxed with bureaucracy and overruns. I'd expect they'll eventually be ok with the US army base issue but it's still an annoying drag on sentiment in the meantime.

Every chance this is on its way to yet another visit to the 300p level seen but never sustained multiple times over the last decade. A decent trading update and more political certainty should continue the upward push. Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK, said: “Balfour Beatty has continued to go from strength to strength under the guidance of Leo Quinn. “Since he took over in 2015, the focus on higher margin business has paid dividends and despite taking a hit from the Carillion fallout, the business has continued to look solid, though like the rest of the construction sector its share price has suffered as a result of the ongoing uncertainty around the UK economy and the Brexit deadlock.” 300p visits Apr 2010 Dec 2010 Jul 2012 Sep 2012 Feb 2014 Apr 2014 Jan 2018 May 2018

..exactly so. Meanwhile, hope that BBY's resurrection of a half-built Carillion hospital project isn't a liability, they certainly seem to have taken enough time to get the deal signed: www.constructionnews.co.uk/contractors/balfour-beatty/balfour-beatty-begins-works-267m-midland-met-12-12-2019/

"Balfour Beatty track inspection system to save industry £10M a year" www.newcivilengineer.com/latest/balfour-beatty-bring-ai-track-inspections-12-11-2019/ Dubious to imagine track inspections being left entirely to a machine learning system. Enhance the inspection process yes, but save money? Not any time soon.

www.theconstructionindex.co.uk/news/view/balfour-beatty-jv-lands-490m-hong-kong-contract [ Balfour Beatty JV lands £490m Hong Kong contract 8 hours ago. Balfour Beatty’s 50:50 joint venture, Gammon Construction, has won a contract worth HK$4.75bn (£490m) to build a manufacturing centre that includes a seawater district cooling system. The seawater district cooling system will be used to cool the entire 108,000m² Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC) The contract for Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation will include all mechanical, electrical and plumbing services, the building façade and a significant amount of steelworks. Gammon - which is a joint venture with Jardine Matheson - will deploy a wide range of technologies and methods including building information modelling (BIM), modularisation and off-site manufacturing techniques to improve safety and quality and contribute to a significant reduction in the duration of the programme. Thomas Ho, chief executive of Gammon, said: “This impressive and complex facility for one of Gammon’s long-term customers is designed to meet the increasing need for high-end on demand manufacturing in the region. This latest success is testament to our proven experience in constructing complex buildings and our market-leading engineering and technical capability.” At construction peak, the project will employ a workforce of about 1,800. Completion is expected in 2021. ]

hxxps://www.building.co.uk/news/balfour-beatty-set-to-start-work-on-midland-met-hospital-by-christmas/5101884.article Balfour Beatty set to start work on Midland Met hospital by Christmas By Jordan Marshall 1 October 2019 But NHS trust still waiting on government to sign-off contract Work will restart before Christmas on the Midlands hospital left in limbo by Carillion’s collapse last year – despite the scheme having still not been signed off by the government. Papers released ahead of this Thursday’s meeting of the Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS trust said Balfour Beatty, the trust’s preferred bidder, will begin the work to complete the job this winter. The trust said it wants the Smethwick hospital to open in time for the start of the Commonwealth Games which are being held in the city in summer 2022. Trust chief executive Toby Lewis said: “Work continues with Balfour Beatty to be ready to restart work in December. “This timetable will allow us access to develop the building in early 2022 and the chance to open before summer 2022 and Birmingham 22, the Commonwealth Games.” The trust first said it wanted Balfour Beatty to get the hospital up and running by the games earlier this summer with the pair eventually agreeing to get practical completion on the job by the middle of February. The trust had originally said it was hoping for a December 2021 deadline with Balfour Beatty wanting April 2022 instead. Lewis said it was set to finally get sign-off from the government for work to re-start by the middle of this month. He told the board: “Approval of permission to sign a contract for Midland Met is still awaited and was due initially in August and is now expected by mid-October. “All the necessary funding is in place and the approval required is simply the commercial go-ahead.” Lewis also said the site would make use of modern methods of construction, with the programme expected to utilise a range of technologies. He added: “The build will make more extensive use of robots than any other UK hospital and a programme to support that technology is in place.” From 2020, staff will have access to augmented reality simulations of the building so they can begin to think through what working there will be like.
