Looks like Turkey have a bigger problem with F35. Placed an order with Spain to manufacture an assault ship for its F35's to operate on which is almost ready for delivery!

Why Turkey May Never Get F-35s for Its 'Aircraft Carrier' After All

I also think that BAE could well be in a good position to pick up the F35 maintenance facility that Turkey initially won.

From a technical point of view, definitely the correct decision. Given the situation at Appledore, Fergusons and H&W, there may be a rearrangement of build strategy which could benefit Cammell Laird. I would like to see more sense of urgency re T26 build though.

The concept of Tempest is to develop new concepts of aviation manufacturing, capability and software. These will initially be developed to enhance the current Typhoon and Gripen capability and future upgrades.
I understand that most of Tempest concept work will be in the development of systems and knowledge sharing. Will an inservice aircraft called Tempest come out of it? I think that the answer to that question is a few years away.

Squid,
Both Industry AND Governments.......

Today at DSEI, leading UK defence companies (BAE Systems, Leonardo UK, Rolls Royce and MBDA UK), together with key Italian Industry players (Leonardo Italy, Elettronica, Avio Aero and MBDA Italy) announced their intent to partner on the Tempest programme by signing a Statement of Intent.

This will see the parties work together to define an innovative concept and partnership model which will include knowledge sharing, product definition and technology development for the joint development of future combat air systems.

According to BAE, Rhe signing of the SOI follows a commitment by the UK and Italian governments to work closely together on Combat Air capabilities, including on systems such as Typhoon and F-35, as well as on Tempest, the UK-initiated next-generation combat air system.

Doesn't actually say that Italy is joining the programme, just that industry will work together.

BAE chief stands by Saudi Arabia deals in spite of backlash
Woodburn defends doing business with regime as protests are expected at trade event

BAE Systems’ chief executive Charles Woodburn will be among those running the gauntlet of human rights activists descending on London this week to protest at the ethics of Saudi Arabia after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

But the head of Britain’s biggest defence company is making no apologies. Saudi Arabia is one of the group’s largest export markets and its dealings with the regime are a fact of life for a big defence contractor.

“We are a defence company. We comply with all the export licensing regimes. The UK has one of the toughest licensing regimes in the world,” Mr Woodburn said in his first interview since taking the helm at the FTSE 100 group just over two years ago.

Despite the question marks over a second order from Saudi Arabia, production of the Typhoon is more secure after a £5bn order from Qatar last year. The contract will extend manufacturing of the jet into the mid-2020s and keep workers at its Warton plant in Lancashire busy where jobs were lost in 201

Zafar Khan, analyst at Société; Générale, credited the recent strong export wins by the company but argued Mr Woodburn must come up with a bolder long-term strategic vision. One answer, he said, would be for BAE to spin off its US business, notably given the “very limited synergy” between the two because of US security requirements.

"Demerging the US Arm is the last thing management want to do!"

If this proves to be true its good news

Italy will join the British-led Team Tempest programme building an advanced fighter jet, boosting the project's chances of getting the aircraft off the ground.

Confirmation of the latest member of the project is expected to come at the giant DSEI military exhibition in London’s Docklands this week.

Tempest is a collaboration between the British Government and industrial partners BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, MBDA and Leonardo.
