The Defense Intelligence Agency awarded a $17.1 billion contract to 16 companies, the Pentagon said Monday.

The contract, which included BAE Systems PLC (BAESY), provides coverage, support and assistance to the Defense Intelligence Agency by delivering timely, cogent military intelligence to warfighters, defense planners and defense and national security policy makers, the Defense Department said.

Six of the 16 awardees are small businesses, the department said and each company will receive a $1,000 minimum guarantee.

BAE Systems’ (BA.) first half order intake fell on last year’s comparable period, although the backlog and sales were up for the period. Net debt jumped from £904m at the aerospace and defence giant’s 2018 full year to £1.89bn, although BAE expects its full year level to be broadly unchanged from the end of last year, while the group targets over £3bn in free cash flow between 2019 and 2021. A one-off tax benefit of £161m was recognised, arising from agreements reached in respect of an overseas tax matter. Sell.

3D printed rocket fuel trialled by Australian engineers

Researchers from James Cook University in Australia have used 3D printing to create solid, plastic-based fuel that they have tested using tailor-made rocket motors.

...."The group also 3D printed the rocket and then made a test rig for it at JCU’s Townsville campus. They tested the fuel grain recipes in three second burns of the motor, before dissecting the fuel cells to further analyse their performance...."

Financial performance measures defined in IFRS(2)

- Revenue increased to GBP8.7bn, up 4% on a constant currency basis(6) .

- Operating profit increased to GBP896m, up 7% on a constant currency basis(6) and excluding the estimated impact of IFRS 16.

- Basic EPS increased to 25.0p, up 69%, driven by the profit performance and the GBP161m one-off tax benefit.

Pension and dividend

- The Group's share of the pre-tax accounting net pension deficit increased to GBP4.3bn (31 December 2018 GBP3.9bn). The funding position is currently estimated to be approximately GBP2.0bn lower than the accounting position.

- Interim dividend increased by 4.4% to 9.4p per share.
