How to invest in the changing energy market

Augean is a British company that handles low-level nuclear waste, which it buries in special landfill sites. It's hard to get planning permission for such sites so competitors will find it difficult to break into the market. The business is much more profitable than normal waste handling, said James Smith, manager of the Premier Energy & Water Trust. "It doesn't have much debt and has just paid its first dividend," he said. "It's a unique company and its shares are reasonably valued. We increased our holding by 50pc following the results earlier this month."

The cost of decommissioning a nuclear power station

The problem is exacerbated by the fact that much of the country's current power supply, especially its aging nuclear power plants, is reaching the end of its design life and will shortly be closed down. In fact, by 2023, all but one of Britain's currently operating nuclear plants will have ceased operation, with the remaining reactor at Sizewell B soldiering on alone until 2035

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), the body responsible for coordinating the dismantling of closed nuclear power facilities and the disposal of radioactive waste, is learning the hard way just how much decommissioning can cost.

A government white paper in 2002 estimated the cost of decommissioning Britain's current fleet of plants would be £43bn, many times greater than EDF's investment at Hinkley Point. This estimate has slowly been revised upwards since then, finally reaching £73bn in 2007, before the NDA admitted the following year that it could still go up by several billion more

Low-level waste volumes from the UK nuclear industry will increase over the coming years. The Augean facility this year has been extended by the Secretary of State in size and life until 2026 and is one of only two sites in Britain that can deal with such waste. Its also operating at prices of about £270 a tonne against £50 a tonne for ordinary industrial waste.

Very positive sign! The nuclear waste division does provide a lot of upside to earningshttp://www.edisoninvestmentresearch.co.uk/?ACT=18&ID=2820A report by Edison Investment Research in March 2010 suggested that if Augean was to accept its full quota of radioactive waste, its profit from the King's Cliffe site would be in excess of £100 million per year. With an extension of ten years Augean could make £1 billion in profits over the next 10 years.

fwiw there is a company called NTR who are in the process of returning c100m euros to shareholders.... one of the biggest holders is 151 who in turn own 18% of Augean. Talk is they may use some of these proceeds to further increase their stake in Augean. Maybe a little far fetched but interesting nonetheless.... lets see what the share px does over the next couple of weeks

Thanks LBO for alerting me to this improvement in 151's financial position
I need to say that having first bought in in Jan 2007 at £1.42 based on the then likelihood of a bid from 151 I do have difficulty taking a bid from them all that seriously; if they offered 50p a share by the time thgey paid all the transaction costs they will have to come up with £45m and not clear to me having scanned through the newsletter they have that amount of money
