Where was Bob Diamond when this company floated back in 2013 at around £9 per share- banging the drum and telling everybody it was a share for the long term investor. Now worth around 13p and about to be delisted from the Stock Exchange. How do people like him get away with it. We should have seen the light with his infamous time at Barclays.

Yes, compared to the assets it has and their externally validated values (e.g. UBN's mkt cap, Botswana mkt cap, EGH mkt cap) then this is really cheap. I think there are two main problems:

1. Lack of demand at the moment to invest in Africa, so not many buyers for this, but also currency values are having a steadily negative impact on the assets of ATMA

2. ATMA's investor relations is dire - cannot find any broker research, they don't appear to make any effort to connect with anyone in UK (despite UK listing as pointed out) and their press coverage is weak. So it's unlikely anyone is going to come across them, particularly PIs or small funds in UK which at this market cap is presumably where they should be looking for investors.

First one will change with time, second one is an internal issue and we need to put pressure on them. kojo.dufu@atlasmara.com is their head of IR - not very good at responding but worth emailing him your concerns in any case.

There is potential here but it is not attracting investors and hence the share price falls continue.

Barclays have today announced a sale of half its stake in Barclays Africa to institutional investors to raise £2 billion. Will this create any opportunities for Atlas Mara who were interested in the business?

David Stevenson in the FT today:

It’s on that basis that I’ve recently added Atlas Mara to my own holdings. This is the African investment vehicle of former Barclays boss Bob Diamond and Africa-based entrepreneur Ashish Thakkar. Now the mere mention of Mr Diamond might spark some angst but I maintain that – love him or hate him – he built a remarkable business at Barclays and is one of the most formidable bankers of his generation. His focus on Africa alongside one of the best businessmen in east Africa (Mr Thakkar is Ugandan) is, I think, a big strength.

Atlas Mara is in effect in its “chrysalis phase”, slowly spending money that will in turn allow it to emerge as a big player in Nigerian and African banking generally. It’s already done some big deals involving ADC and BancABC in southern and eastern Africa, invested in a new bank in Rwanda and acquired a chunky stake in Union Bank of Nigeria. This last deal has a fascinating echo – UBN used to be known as Barclays Bank CDO and has now grown into a regional bank with $6.3bn of assets.

Atlas raised $325m at the end of last year and another $300m in the summer and is clearly building a war chest to assemble a regional banking powerhouse. Investors have to take a fair bit of this on trust, of course, but I think Mr Diamond and Mr Thakkar will deliver. If they do, UK-based investors will have a relatively clean way to play what will be one of the major investment stories of the next few decades.

The major investment story is African development.

Atlas Mara Co-Nvest Limited ("Atlas Mara" or the "Company") is pleased to announce the results of its successful placing of Ordinary Shares with Warrants being issued to subscribers of Ordinary Shares in the IPO on the basis of one Warrant per Ordinary Share (the "Matching Warrants") (the "Placing").

Atlas Mara has raised gross proceeds of $325 million including the founders' investment of $20 million.

Atlas Mara has been formed to undertake an acquisition of a target company or business (the "Acquisition"). The Company's efforts in identifying a prospective target company or business will not be limited to a particular industry or geographic region. However, given the experience of the Company's founders and its board, the Company expects to focus on acquiring a company or business in the financial services sector with all or a substantial portion of its operations in Africa.

The Directors believe that there are significant gaps in the market today including the need for capital created by European financial institutions retreating to their home territories due to the sovereign debt crisis and the Basel III regulatory framework at a critical time for growth in Africa. This situation presents opportunities for the Company to execute the Acquisition and to create a financial institution that provides leadership, liquidity, access to investors, product innovation, and technology to support economic growth and strengthen financial systems in Africa.
