Market report.. Data out mid-morning from the Office National Statistics was almost overlooked, even though it surprisingly showed retail sales dropping 0.5% last month versus expectations for a 0.2% increase, though September's decline was revised up to 0.4% from 0.8%. This is looking very positive again today. Who would have thought it when others were predicting doom and gloom. Perhaps the directors at Primark and ABF know a bit more about retail than the self proclaimed experts on this bulletin board :-) I'd settle for 2700p at close of play today :-)

Hi Phil - there isn't much good news out there ATM is there? Primark won't just keep adding extra footage whilst like for like sales decline - they are just moving their own sales from existing units to new units France is very positive & the first store in Poland will fly There is really only two periods left in 'the golden' quarter so those who haven't had a decent October to date will have to start paddling very fast! Black Friday is around the corner with online retailers already hi-lighting pending offers The weather is currently great for the High Street cold/bright/dry - time to 'make hay whilst the sun shines' An interesting & critical two months ahead

Analysts at RBC Capital Markets said the results were slightly better than forecast and the flat earnings for 2019 are not unexpected. Broker Liberum reckoned "in line" was a better description, with adjusted operating profit of £1.4bn was 4% ahead of Bloomberg consensus. Analysts noted that Primark's second half LFL sales fell 2.7%, with Primark UK LFLs down 0.6% in the second half while Eurozone sales were pressured, particularly Northern Europe, due to weather. Grocery, Agriculture and Ingredient profits are all ahead of expectations. HTTPS://uk.webfg.com/news/news-and-announcements/ab-foods-presses-on-with-investment-as-earnings-impress--3578637.html

Market report: Perched at the top of the index was Associated British Foods, up 2.6% after its low-cost fashion chain Primark helped to offset a weak price environment that is hobbling ABF's sugar unit. "Sugar earnings may be under pressure, but this is still a sweet result from Associated British Foods. Overall group earnings have beaten market expectations, as a strong performance from other divisions such as Primark take up sugar's slack," commented Fiona Cincotta, senior market analyst at City Index. For the financial year that ended September 15, AB Foods's pretax profit fell 18% to GBP1.28 billion from GBP1.58 billion a year ago, as the company incurred a GBP34 million loss on sale and closure of businesses compared to a GBP293 million profit on such items the year before. However, on an adjusted basis, pretax profit increased 5% to GBP1.37 billion. The company's revenue increased 1.4% to GBP15.57 billion from GBP15.36 billion a year ago. AB Foods's adjusted earnings per share came in at 134.9 pence, up 6% on the previous year and beating company-compiled analysts consensus which forecast an increase of 4.6% to 132.9p. Primark "delivered its most significant profit growth in recent years", with adjusted operating profit up 15% to GBP843 million from GBP735 million and revenue up 6.1% to GBP7.48 billion from GBP7.05 billion. AB Foods's Sugar unit, meanwhile, recorded a 51% drop in adjusted profit to GBP123 million from GBP249 million.
