10/10/2019 17:07 | Gerry thanks for your post. Like I said the whole region is a mess full of several different factions and tribal differences going back centuries. What makes this unpalatable for me is that many of these Kurds have bravely fought and lost many people, some in the worst ways, while putting down ISIS. They now find themselves abandoned and having to defend themselves with guns and the odd armoured vehicle against air strikes, rockets, tanks and a huge army. Just doesn't sit right with me. | soulsauce
10/10/2019 16:42 | Soul, Whilst i have little doubt that Erdogan is trying to bolster flagging electoral popularity, there is much more to the Kurds/Turkish situation than meets the eye. It is part of human behaviour to assume the smaller of two combatants are the victims but people need to know that Turks have had some 35000 people killed by Kurds over the years. I defy anybody to 'mug up' on the PKK and not be utterly confused as to who they are and what they stand for other than trying to create a Kurdish state. Now whether the YPG are closely linked to the PKK or not (erdogan says they are but....?)I don't know. But what is clear is that over the many years of middle-east conflict, the Kurdish fighters have been armed by the west (both the US and UK) and when the fighting stops they are much better armed than they were at the outset. From a Turkish perspective, these weapons are then turned on the Turks. In addition, not all 'Kurds' are supporters of either the PKK or YPG. Turkey's relation ship with Iraqui kurds are, I believe, much friendlier and based on strong trading links. So, although almost every country is now supporting the Kurds, they weren't exactly that keen to help when Turkey was asking for military support (effectively 'boots on the ground') when Assad was murdering the Syrian population that has resulted in more than 3 million refugees in Turkey. They were happy to arm the Kurds despite Erdogan warning them what would happen (effectively they simply view this as 'Turkeys' problem). But when turkey wants to deal with 'their' problem they are calling foul. Like most i hope that the Turks show some ( a lot) of restraint but wouldn't hold my breath. He's very much the egotist that both Johnson and Trump are. | gerrystewart

09/10/2019 22:22 | Thanks Ash, I will have a look over there | d1g3y
09/10/2019 20:15 | Hi again D1g3y, yes I posted a link, but I have pulled the spreadsheet for now while I work on some updated numbers based on the recent interims. I did post a link to some cash flow statements together with some analysis on the LSE board at the weekend. May be of interest for now. Cheers, Ash | m20ash
09/10/2019 20:08 | Hi D1g3y, they are paid in TL and, as I understand it, then immediately exchange some or all for $US, which is used to repay the loan, which is $ denominated. Funds are converted back to TL as and when required. Makes sense given the depreciation of the TL, although it has been a bit steadier this year. Cheers, Ash | m20ash
09/10/2019 17:45 | Do AAU sell to Turkey in dollars? Their costs are in Lira | d1g3y
09/10/2019 17:38 | yes Charles but a weakening of the economy also brought with it the prospect of significant inflation further in the cycle. So while AAU could benefit from a weak lira in the short term there could be a dark cloud on costs later down the line. As yet the lira hasn't weakened significantly from what I can see, probably as Trump is now apparently being supportive from what I heard. | jaynesdad
09/10/2019 17:28 | last time Turkey upset Trump (pastor whatsisname?) the Lira suffered but that benefitted AAU as most of their costs are in Lira. It also put Turkish holidays into bargain territory | charles clore |
