It’s all rather quiet. Low volumes - no announcements from the firm, still no UK and Europe CEO either.

I like that - strategy is 3% - execution is the rest. I completely agree. And these guys came massively undone on the execution last year. I think a lot hinges on who they hire to replace the guy they fired. Clearly the last guy couldn’t handle the switch from small scale - the delivery team needs to excellent.

Yeah totally. Or I wouldn't be speculating! I've worked in events and there's definitely a strong case for a company that seeks to consolidate some of the market. But strategy is 3%. Execution makes up the rest. Integration is a sticking point.

I saved the following snippet from somewhere a little while ago (can't remember from where): "Arena Events Plc. Arena’s offerings include specialist temporary physical structures, seating, ice rinks, furniture and interiors, mostly for sporting, cultural and corporate events of a Tier 1 nature. The company focuses on creating long-term, multi-year contracts with clients (for example it has had a relationship with Wimbledon for 50 years and the Ryder Cup for 20 years) and therefore large proportion, recurring revenues are attractive. Operating in a highly fragmented marketplace, with competition tending to be sector/region-specific, and Arena’s strategy is one of consolidation, organically or via bolt-on acquisition, both geographically and by product. We believe this strategy to be a sensible one as the consequential breadth and depth of service it can offer, coupled with an experienced management team and strong heritage, should position them to grow ahead of the market, enhance margins and improve asset utilisation." What do people think, is this a sensible assessment?

It wishes! No me and QS are on the NMCN bb. That's been a cracking share.

Yes NMCN is the mirror image of Arena. The question is will it drop that 2pc today, Monday or Tuesday? Still waiting for the announcement of a new UK and Europe CEO to operationally lead what is a complex hands on construction business. It strikes me as a classic small firm IPO syndrome - rather than continuing to concentrate on running the business they spend their day refreshing their screens to check the stock price.

As they already said the second half of the year was chaos. I think they spent a fortune making good their Ryder Cup commitments and other one off jobs. The warm Winter weather possibly meant that their ice rink business was more cost intensive than usual and generated less profit. I see that their have been a number of buys today, lumps of stock, which are holding up the price. I think the operational failings of the UK and Europe business in the latter part of the year indicate poor governance. And they are yet to announce a replacement UK and Europe CEO so they are heading for the peak season without any hands on leadership in place. Losing half their value in a morning is unforgivable and who knows what’s next for them.

They had 6.5m at end of H1, then raised £20m in September. Have made several acquisitions so you'd have to tot all them up to get your rough estimate.

I think it's far from a dead duck. CEO is solid and has addressed the issues. The recent acquisitions look promising and it's a global business with some very good events on its books. Not without it's risks so I'd agree with SCSW's 'speculative buy' assessment.

I guess if they've already halved are you prepared for them to half again or worse go bust? It could happen. I'm in low but operating with a tight stop on this one.

From reading the back of the standard just now it sounds like it's contained to one stable and that they've spotted it early. It's highly contagious but even so, it's 5 weeks to the festival which is a long time to get it under control. Last time it was cancelled was 2001 with foot and mouth and this doesn't seem anywhere near as serious. Will certainly be watching with interest.

What does everyone think? Arena have certainly had a run of bad luck, the big fine from the US government, whatever operational issues occurred which caused the share price to basically half and now maybe this. Holding on to the shares in the hope they would bounce back quickly felt like a plan. I am less convinced now. Any thoughts?
