LONDON (AFX) - Antonov PLC said its founder, deputy chairman and technical

We're sure that
you're going to see this technology emerge
in automotive production somewhere in the
not too distant future. So, rememberthat you
heard all about it here first, because
it won't be a secret much longer.

Roumen Antonov's car to appear on Top Gear?
Rumours are with a TX6 transmission and AMM supercharger .... this is hard to believe as the car is normally RWD and the TX6 is for FWD, but Roumen is perfectly capable of rotating the engine or whatever to make it happen if that is what he really wants. Last time we spoke he planned to use his dual clutch design, but that was when SAIC were looking at his transmission for the Rover 75.

I have been to that Nissan website now.
I was wrong about a couple of things: 1, the Xtronic is for export to the US so sales should exceed the few hundred per year I mentioned above; 2, the manual comes with 16" wheels too so the better fuel economy of the Xtronic compared with a manual (if I read you post right) is down to the transmission.

It has little to do with Antonov however. What matters for Antonov is: A, whether Geely reach their aims of 2 million vehicles per annum by 2015 and what transmissions these vehicles have, and how many Antonov transmissions Geely sell to other Chinese OEMs; and B, whether Antonov find other takers for the TX6.

A Nissan Xtronic wouldn't be an ideal transmission for my driving as I do some international motorway driving. As the traction fluid warms, the traction coefficient drops so I wouldn't get the benefit of the increased efficiency of variators when they run cold. Xtronic is in my opinion better suited to driving kids to schools.

It is more relevent to TRK as Jatco seem to have a 10 year market lead on Aisin's rival TRK ERC IVT, which hasn't really started R&D yet.

The cheapest way to save fuel is to just use higher gear ratios.
An easy way to change the gear ratios on your car is to put bigger wheels on.
The fuel economy of the two vehicles is very similar, but the manual has 15" wheels and the CVT has 16" wheels, is that right? (It is hard to read in the format above.)

Post a link bearable and we can check.

I think I had sales figures once for the Xtronic, something like nearly 400 per annum. I know that sounds stupidly low, but I don't mean four hundred thousand, I really mean four hundred. Can anybody verify or refute this?

The Xtronic doesn't have the high regime epicyclic of Torotrak's coaxial IVT and uses the more efficient half toroidal variator. The TRK IVT rollers have something like a 20% camber angle to stabilise the rollers. This means they are only really pointing straight ahead at a ratio of around -1:1 and at other ratios the rollers will skid.

Hopefully Aisin will be able to raise the money they need to continue R&D on Torotrak's IVT, as TRK have a new invention (epicyclic roller control) which Torotrak believe will allow it to become a viable automobile transmission.

Just Auto have a report on the transmission market to 2014. Section 3 covers established transmission makers: Antonov, Audi, .... ZF, and section 4 covers wannabees like Torotrak. Anybody have a copy to say if there is anything interesting in there?
