Investors Chronicle:

Antofagasta profits soar but production falters

Copper miner to hand out hefty interim payout but flags water shortage as a risk to production

August 19, 2021

A looming fall in the copper price is not ideal for Antofagasta but it is in net cash and looks to soon have a fix to its water issues.

Buy.

I can't invest in this, one thing investors hate is uncertainty.

Hi SBK,

Thanks. Can't go against such open-mindedness. ANTO production report on 26th April; ex-divi date, the 27th.

As we know, 4 weeks-plus is often a long time in markets, especially considering the recent volatility of copper & macro-factors in general. Add Brexit & the Trump factor into the mix & it's akin to shooting in the dark. Without a scattergun, I'll continue to avoid risking further damage here.

Re Soi: I guess he figured that whatever some folk may think of you, no-one who knows you from iii would ever seriously consider you an idiot. A few might have other choice descriptions, but that's how things go for those who are occasionally misunderstood. ;o) - Regards. Catch up later.

Eadwig,

It is actually 30 nations to negotiate with: there are also Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland!

Beyond the obvious economic and political mess which is looming I am actually more concerned about those of us remainers who want to keep our EU citizenship for cultural reasons. It is madness to lose our 44 year old European rights and freedoms and allow ourselves to be led by the likes of Farage and other small-minded xenophobes. I am particularly angry about the nastiness which has been encouraged to surface against eastern Europeans by such rags as The Daily Express and also the Government's supine reverence for the Trump Administration.

I could go on. And probably will.

Meantime, I am dithering about ANTO. There is now the gap at 830 to fill. But why should it apart from a retrace from a 23 point drop being a routine occurrence intraday? Perhaps the price of copper will recover a bit. Maybe investors' money will move into safe $ earning, foreign - facing stocks with the UK heading into huge uncertainty this week. Then there is soi with his improbable string of longs this morning tempting one to follow him either to 10 point gains or off a cliff. Unsure which at the moment...

IMHO,

SBK

michaei or whatever successfully filtered.

No issue with Chinese Investor and he is the topic starter and as such is entitled to his views.

Debate the views, don`t attack the poster.

Copper down near 1.5 % today.

Hi Eadwig,

Thanks & you're welcome. No doubt I speak for many in my appreciation. Good research alone is time-consuming, even if experiences helps one to better identify the gist. That's without actively trading as well. Doing both isn't easy for any individual. Hence, great value of shared info on BBs.

It's also easy to become discouraged when things go against & rewards delayed by far longer than anticipated. Many people need a break. We've all been there.

I did exactly 62 small SB trades on Wednesday alone. A HUGE number for me, but of no value to others as no time to post anything. All scalping indices both directions. Last one just before 9 pm. I couldn't do that most days, even if I wanted to. But I emphasise, these were small lower-risk trades. I hold much bigger SB positions underwater.

To get maximum rewards from markets, it really needs a full-time approach. For eg. as Soi adopts. But focusing more so on basic TA actually saves time from a day-trading perspective. Not least as markets can be sentiment-driven & irrational, whilst fundamental news is more important for mid-to-long term traders & investors.

It's unfortunate for longer-term holders of NXT or any other retail stocks with Brexit ahead, et al, & yet to fully play out. That's one of a few sectors that really can't avoid greater challenges for the foreseeable future. I'm sure we'll see more focus on cost-cutting & moving more business online where possible. I agree, that'll be key to any strong recovery of many retailers future profits. Sadly, that'll also entail job-losses elsewhere.

My trading approach just days before Brexit trigger remains as before: not that there haven't been temptations to buy again, but I'm 100% in cash with real shares. Key thing: I need to exit bigger SB positions sooner than later, even if I bolster my account via small-stake scalping. My bigger issues can't be delayed indefinitely.

I probably won't buy anything more until after EU convene on 29th April, as they try to agree a collective response to PM May's A50 trigger on 29th March. Presumably, meaningful talks won't start until at least well after April. Maybe even as late as June has been mentioned by EU sources.

Considering that even 2 full years after A50 triggered is seen by many as nowhere near enough time, it's hard to be very optimistic. No trade deal leaves reliant on more expensive WTO rules & that'll be another clear negative for much of UK PLC. Interesting times ahead & no doubt some good trading opportunities.

Ah, the Comp: for first time in its history, I sit back & enjoy proceedings with total neutrality. Never been in the running this time & I'm sure that my 2 BARC shorts (one well underwater) has more to do with that failure than even irrational, Trump-driven markets. ;o) Regards.

SBK,

Well played, but if I was you I'd consider doing a quick screen-grab of Comp tracker before tomorrow's open. Omens for mid-week leaders remaining so by Friday's close are fairly remote if going by previous trends. You'll not see SBK positioned first again for a very long time, IMHO.

Main thing here: copper still dropping, $2.59+ as I write, & associated miners likely to follow soon.

If not for variables of ANTO's results on 14th March, I'd be even more confident of some ANTO shorts recovering sooner than later. But as it is, caution remains a byword here.

Regards & GL.

Hello soi,

Very good to hear from you and thank you for looking me up.

Back to 1984.

I have indeed been disbarred from posting on iii.

I strongly suspect this has happened due to a raft of spurious complaints made about me to the administration by COMP competitors. The guilty ring probably include Eadwig, JD, GOS and vtec. Clearly, with my 1st and 2nd place in the last 3 weeks and now 6th overall season position they were becoming increasingly alarmed.

Or, it could be the Broadmoor1 gang on the LLOYDS board who disagree with my views. It was perhaps the post in which I argued that “Mrs May was grovelling to the fat torturer Trump” which got me the chop. Both self-evident truths I maintain. And pretty mild stuff compared to some of the things that I written on iii in a seventeen year, 7500 post career.

Freedom of speech and the courage to say it is very important to me. Recently, I attacked lolabe for his offensive and ludicrous Holocaust denial posts but I did not complain to the management. Fake news cannot be suppressed on the internet it has to be challenged at every turn.

My exclusion from iii is the worst case of injustice since the Dreyfus case and I expect all my SBK cult followers to demand my reinstatement and substantial damages for causing me mental distress.

My patriotic fans may also wish to sign this:

As investors, I think we should fear Trump more than anything else from now.

I know this is a bit of an imposition soi, but I would be very grateful if you could copy and post this to the iii Barc board. I fear some there may be suffering withdrawal symptoms from not having regular infusions from my intellect. Also maybe you could pop in to this ADVFN ANTO thread to collect my COMP entry next weekend? And also wash my car next time that you are in the UK?

Thank you and all good luck to everybody not entered in the COMP.

IMHO,

SBK
