THEY may have missed their original target but the team drilling for oil off Bournemouth have still struck black gold – an estimated 15 million barrels of it.

Corallian Energy’s exploration well on the Colter Field in Poole Bay made the surprise discovery to the south of the site the firm originally intended to hit.

Despite missing the mark, the ‘jack-up’; rig, which arrived in the area earlier this month, continued to drill and has now struck oil and gas.

It is now thought Colter South could yield 15 million barrels of oil, but, said the company: “Further work will be required to refine this assessment with the new well data.”

An oil rig carrying out test drilling off the Dorset coast "unexpectedly" missed its target but has hit another known area of oil and gas reserves.

Energy firm Corallian has already been granted a month-long extension until the end of March to continue drilling from the temporary rig in Poole Bay.

The firm has also been granted permits to drill laterally to its original target, known as the Colter Prospect.

Environmentalists fear further drilling will increase the risk to wildlife.

Corallian said its vertical well, off Bournemouth, had reached oil and gas in an area referred to as Colter South, after drilling "unexpectedly remained on the southern side of the Colter Prospect".

Corallian estimated Colter South contained about 15 million barrels of recoverable oil but it said further work would now be needed to "refine this assessment".

It said it was making preparations to drill a side track to evaluate the neighbouring Colter Prospect, which would take about two weeks.

Quelle surprise!

This dog is sooooo predictable. Keep buying at these crazy prices mug punters - soon to be a lot more shares dumped on the market for you to absorb.

In old money (pre consolidation) there will be over 30Bn shares in issue at equivalent share price to sell of 0.009p

@bbcsoutheast At the northern tip of the test area #CorallianEnergy now believes it has struck black gold, It's potentially a hugely significant find. That could be more than £700 million #Oil in place #Colter

How do you "Loose" a licence ??

They will loose the licence held by eagle by the end of March. Even a success at Colter north will then depend on the operators at wytech farm coming in with an offer. They are the only people who can develop any discovery cheaply as they have infrastructure in place

Why is missing the target and having to spend and extra 2 weeks drilling a side track at extra expense good news? Especially when ADL is out of cash. How much is ADL's share of the additional cost? - ADL is on the hook for 10%. The well drilled and the side track both get plugged and abandoned without any oil being recovered, not that a net pay of 3m would be anything to get excited about even if they were to be flow testing.

Still there is always Friday and Eagle to look forward to:

Provide the results of two G&G studies to the OGA by 1 March 2019
together with a conclusion as to whether the results of these studies
support a drill decision; and

+ Provide an update to the OGA by 1 March 2019 on all pre-drill decision
work.

Without a farm in partner to fund that OGA is not going to be overly impressed. No doubt there will be a positive spin put on it though to keep mug punters believing.
