Alstom inks power plant deals worth $1.37b
They are EPC deals for new power plants for Tuas Power, Keppel

By RONNIE LIM

TWO deals worth a combined $1.37 billion for new power plants at Tuas Power (TP) and Keppel Merlimau Cogen have been sealed by France's Alstom, leaving just Sembcorp - among gencos here planning expansions to use liquefied natural gas feedstock - still to sew up its project.

'It (TP contract) represents a major breakthrough and is proof of our competitiveness.'

- Philippe Joubert,
Alstom Power president

TP, owned by Huaneng Power International, whose American Depository Receipts are now traded on the Singapore Exchange, has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) deal worth 260 million euros ($470 million) for a new 400-megawatt combined cycle plant (CCP), Alstom said.

One of TP's two older steam plants will be 're-powered' as a more-efficient CCP, making it the genco's fifth such gas-fired plant. TP president and CEO Lim Kong Puay told BT this month that a decision on whether to build a sixth CCP will likely be taken by mid-2011, depending on the electricity market growth.

The fifth CCP will be completed in 2014, coinciding with the first supplies of LNG here in early 2013.

Alstom Power president Philippe Joubert said: 'This is our first contract with TP. It represents a major breakthrough and is proof of our competitiveness.'

But Alstom is no stranger to Keppel, having built the latter's current 500 megawatt (MW) plant at Tembusu sector on Jurong Island. Now it will handle a 800MW expansion there after clinching a $900 million EPC deal from the Singapore conglomerate. The expansion will bring Keppel close to its licensed generating capacity of 1,400 MW.

Keppel Energy's managing director Ong Tiong Guan said: 'The expansion is a milestone. With it, we will be able to capture opportunities from Singapore's evolving energy market.'

The industry's regulator, the Energy Market Authority (EMA), noted recently that that there has been a sharp increase in electricity demand here, without any commensurate increase in generation capacity.

The big three foreign-owned generating companies - Senoko Energy, PowerSeraya and TP - are all re-powering or adding new capacity. New player Island Power, owned by India's GMR, is building an 800MW station. And smaller local players such as Sembcorp need to boost their capacity to better compete.

Sembcorp, which has 815 MW of capacity at its Sakra plant, said in August that it was planning an $800 million multi-utility facility, including a 400 MW CCP, at Tembusu. This followed deals it signed with Germany's Lanxess, for waste-water treatment, and Jurong Aromatics Corporation, for steam and other utilities.

A Sembcorp spokesperson said yesterday: 'In addition to securing JAC as a major customer, we have made progress on our second cogeneration plant, including committing to take LNG from aggregator BG Group and obtaining an EMA generation licence (to increase its capacity). We are also in the final stages of evaluating EPC players.'

BrightSource, Alstom Partner on Solar Thermal
Lisa Damast | October 23rd, 2010 | Comment | Email this Share BrightSource Energy is expected to go public in 2011.

Israeli solar energy company BrightSource Energy and French power company Alstom have partnered to build solar thermal power plants throughout the Mediterranean and in Africa.

The plants will use BrightSource's solution that relies on thousands of mirrors all focused on a central tower with a water boiler atop of it to heat the water and turn it to steam which then turns a conventional turbine that generates electricity.

According to John Woolard, CEO of BrightSource Energy, the agreements,

"reflect the growing global demand for highly efficient, reliable and environmentally-responsible solar power plants. With decades of experience building power plants in these regions, Alstom is an ideal partner as we expand into these markets."

This latest partnership comes after BrightSource raised $55 million from Alstom in May and ongoing news of the solar plant BrightSource is planning to build in the Mojave desert in California. The plant is set to be the largest solar energy plant in the world. The company is also expected to announce an IPO soon.

Neither company revealed a time frame for the Mediterranean "ring".

Israeli solar technology company ZenithSolar revealed this week the third generation of its solar panel technology. The new technology combines heating and electricity in a manner that can make it affordable without government subsidies.

Alstom Says Sales Growth in India May Outpace Economy on Rail Investment
By Subramaniam Sharma - Oct 18, 2010 5:46 AM GMT+0200 Tweet (13)LinkedIn Share
Business ExchangeBuzz up!DiggPrint Email . Sunand Sharma, chairman and country president of Alstom Projects India Ltd. Photographer: Prashanth Vishwanathan/Bloomberg
Alstom SA, the world's second- largest trainmaker, said Indian sales growth may surpass local economic expansion as the government works on a 14 trillion rupee ($317 billion) plan to expand and modernize railroads.

The company has to be prepared for India growth "which is equal to if not higher than GDP," Sunand Sharma, 61, Alstom's local head, said in an Oct. 15 interview at his office in Noida, near New Delhi. He declined to give specific sales numbers.

Alstom, which also makes power-plant systems, expects to eventually get a third of India sales from transportation as the government expands the railroads 10 percent a year to support economic growth. The Paris-based company has been shortlisted with General Electric Co., Bombardier Inc. and Siemens AG as a possible partner in an Indian trainmaking venture and is considering building a rail-car plant in the country.

"India is an opportunity but not without hiccups," said Jagannadham Thunuguntla, chief strategist at SMC Global Securities Ltd., which manages $100 million in assets in New Delhi. "For companies, it may be better to sacrifice profit margin for scale because whoever comes in now will have first- mover advantage."

The planned trainmaking venture will produce about 120 electric locomotives a year, according to the rail ministry. Bids have to be submitted by Oct. 25, A.K. Saxena, a ministry spokesman, said by phone Oct. 15 in New Delhi. He declined to say when a decision will be made.

Railway Expansion

Indian Railways, the state-owned rail operator, has proposed to add 25,000 kilometers (15,534 miles) of new lines by 2020, compared with the 10,000 kilometers added in the past six decades, according to the rail ministry. The nation's economy, Asia's third-largest, will probably expand at a 9 percent annual pace by the year ending March 2012, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in June.

Alstom may build an Indian rail-car factory after last month winning a 14.7 billion-rupee contract from Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. to supply 168 carriages, Sharma said. He declined to say where the factory may be built or when a decision will be made.

Alstom's India operations have mainly focused on the power sector to date. Alstom Projects India Ltd., a subsidiary, generated 97 percent of its 20.4 billion rupees of sales in the year ended March from its power division and the rest from transportation, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Alstom has other ventures and businesses in India. Sharma declined to comment on local sales numbers.

Alstom's power operations may boost India sales to more than 1 billion euros a year from several hundred million euros, Denis Cochet, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Alstom's power division, said Oct. 12.

The company is building two factories with Pune, India- based Bharat Forge Ltd. that will make equipment for so-called super-critical power plants, which use less energy and generate higher pressure for greater efficiency than traditional plants. The factories will start operations in phases from April 2012, Bharat Forge said in its annual report for the year ended March.

ALSTOM : Wins a Contract Worth €160 Million to Build an Environmental Control System in a Coal-Fired Power Plant in South Africa
10/14/2010 | 09:20 am
Regulatory News:

Alstom (Paris:ALO), the world's leading supplier of air quality control systems (AQCS) for power plants, has won a contract worth approximately €160 million to build South Africa's first wet flue gas desulphurisation (FGD*) system at the Kusile power plant, further strengthening its leadership in air quality control systems.

Alstom will engineer, supply and install six wet limestone FGD plants for the six new 800 MW coal fired boilers in the Kusile power plant. These systems will remove more than 90% of the sulphur oxide generated in the boilers, making Kusile the most environmentally-friendly coal-fired power plant in sub-Saharan Africa. The contract, booked in the 2nd quarter of the 2010/2011 fiscal year, will be executed in consortium with Cosira, a major structural steel fabrication, mechanical and piping construction company in South Africa.

Andreas Lusch, Senior Vice President at Alstom Power says: ?Alstom's FGD systems will contribute to the sustainable development of South Africa by enabling Eskom to generate electricity from local coal, using the most advanced desulphurisation solution in the market. We are proud to have been chosen to supply South Africa's first FGD system and help the country meet its environmental targets.?

Eskom and Alstom have a long-standing relationship: Alstom has provided major equipment to 12 of South Africa's 13 coal-fired power plants and Africa's only nuclear power plant. In South Africa. Alstom's presence spans over 100 years, its turbines generate 80% of the country's installed capacity. Alstom has provided 30% of the country's boilers. Most recently, the two companies have collaborated on projects such as the retrofitting of the Arnot power plant, an integrated retrofit project providing a capacity increase to that station of more than 300 MW, and the retrofitting of the Koeberg nuclear facility, which will increase the power output by over 65 MW, improve the availability and reliability of power supply, and will also extend the lifetime of the plant.

Editor's Notes
*Flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) systems remove sulphur dioxide released from coal-fired power plants. Alstom offers wet, seawater and dry processes for FGD to meet the varying economic requirements of its customers. Seawater flue gas desuphurisation (SWFGD) is suitable for thermal power stations, metal smelters and oil refineries, and efficiently treats flue gases containing 20-6500 ppm of sulphur dioxide. The compact design provides a good solution to both new and retrofit installations and is especially cost-efficient on applications that already use seawater as a coolant. The first Alstom SWFGD plant started operation in 1968. Today, more than 90 of these units have been installed or are under construction in different parts of the world, corresponding to a total equivalent capacity of about 32 GW of flue gas desulphurisation.

About Alstom
Alstom is a global leader in the world of power generation, power transmission and rail infrastructure and sets the benchmark for innovative and environmentally friendly technologies. Alstom builds the fastest train and the highest capacity automated metro in the world, provides turnkey integrated power plant solutions and associated services for a wide variety of energy sources, including hydro, nuclear, gas, coal and wind, and it offers a wide range of solutions for power transmission, with a focus on smart grids. Alstom Targets 1 Billion Euros of Sale to India Power Generating Companies
By Francois de Beaupuy - Oct 12, 2010 3:28 PM GMT+0200 Tweet (2)LinkedIn Share
Business ExchangeBuzz up!DiggPrint Email .Alstom SA is targeting annual sales of power equipment in India of more than 1 billion euros ($1.4 billion) after making what it said was the lowest bid for a local contract.

Alstom, the world's third-largest power-equipment maker, and partner Bharat Forge Ltd. offered to supply NTPC Ltd., India's biggest electricity producer, with steam turbines and alternators for 660-megawatt plants for "slightly less" than 700 million euros, said Denis Cochet, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Alstom's power division.

"We're very well placed to get this contract" for five power plants, Cochet said today in a phone interview. "With orders like that and others, we're hoping to grow in India, to go from several hundred million euros of annual revenue to more than a billion euros within several years."

India, Asia's second-fastest growing economy, is adding power-generating capacity to help reduce blackouts. Alstom, based in the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret, is banking on emerging nations to revive revenue as a slump in investments by European and U.S. utilities prompted the manufacturer to announce about 4,000 job cuts this month at divisions that supply gas- and coal-fired plants.

The Alstom-Bharat Forge venture beat Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., India's biggest power-equipment maker, and a venture owned by Toshiba Corp. and JSW Group, Cochet said. Alstom and Bharat Forge may get contracts for some or all of six more plants from state-owned NTPC should the competitors refuse to provide equipment at Alstom's price, he said.

Lowest Bid

NTPC confirmed in a response to e-mailed questions that Alstom was the lowest bidder. The Toshiba venture submitted the highest bid followed by Bharat Heavy, the company said.

Alstom and Bharat Forge are building a plant in India that will be able to supply 5,000 megawatts of equipment a year, Cochet said. The plant will start operations in mid-2011, and will work at full capacity in mid-2012, he said.

"Having local costs is the way to beat the Chinese," Cochet said. Alstom is also bidding in partnership with BHEL to supply boilers for the 11 coal-fired plants planned by NTPC.

Alstom's orders for power systems and services dropped 35 percent in the April to June period to 1.95 billion euros, and sales fell 6 percent to 3.17 billion euros.
