Says it all !

"The Trust’s quoted equity portfolio produced a return of 9.5% for
the period against the benchmark’s 12.0% return."

Thats the end of 'merger' talk, look forward to the outcome of the review.

Agreed. It would be called a merger but would effectively be a Rothschild takeover.

This will not be a merger, if it goes ahead the new trust will need a name, board, key players and be based somewhere. I don't see the new company being based in Scotland or being controlled by anyone other that the Rothschild's, therefore it will be a takeover and puts its very existence in peril it won't get my vote.

Not in my view - any bid is just about closing the 10% discount. Over the long-term that's not a big issue.

RIT Capital Partners may be on a premium now but will it too be on a discount in 5 years? I would like Alliance Trust to get its act together and perform. It's been going since 1888 and shouldn't be brought down by the previous rubbish Board.

RIT Capital Partners probably only has another 5-10 years with Rothschild at the helm before retiring. Not even great men go on forever!

Aren`t you pre-judging the issue? No terms of any "merger" have been offered as yet by RIT but the market is now on alert as shown by the positive reaction today on the Alliance s.p.

I'm not that keen on a RIT merger. At the end of the day its very straightforward and the Strategy Review should have been completed a long time ago.

The Strategy Review should be to employ a top quartile investment manager / multi-manager Witan style approach of best of breed managers. They would have £2.5bn to manage and so there should be no shortage of top quality names applying.

Merging with RIT is too short term. The guy is 80 and what happens when he needs to retire? KEEP ALLIANCE TRUST INDEPENDENT gets my vote, rather than just getting Rothschild (another over paid individual) to boost his personal ego by getting RIT to No. 1 in the investment trust charts. I've nothing against RIT and am a shareholder, but this is not the way forward for a trust with the fantastic heritage of Alliance Trust.

This approach has put Alliance well & truly into play. If RIT are serious, they need to put an offer on the table.

More expensive distractions....

The Board of Alliance Trust notes recent press speculation relating to
an unsolicited approach received by the Board and confirms that RIT
Capital Partners plc ("RIT") has approached Alliance Trust with an
informal proposal for a merger of the two companies.

They need to pay for the redundancy package of the self styled global leader.
The idea is that you pay for it.

Oh dear... after only just arriving as a new customer from Stocktrade they are putting my investment account fees up for an inferior service.

Hopefully Alliance Trust will get back to what they should be doing. Employing an above average investment manager. Great opportunity for someone to put this company back on a sure footing.

Don't feel sorry for Garrett-Cox. Her and Forseke were both ruthless women and good examples of why positive discrimination in favour of women in the boardroom does not work. Garrett-Cox fleeced shareholders out of millions, not forgetting early pay-offs for numerous excellent non-exec directors who were sacked for failing to agree with her. She will now take a "redundancy" pay-off and recieve her vested shares in due course. A classic "fat-cat" case! As Chairman, Forseke should have controlled her, but failed to do so.

For once it seems that activist directors have had a positive influence. When the current equity bear market is over (and it isn't yet)it is my intention to re-build a decent sized position in ATST and enjoy the dividend stream.

Think the CEO will be walking the plank at some point soon. No doubt there will be a couple of £m on offer for the very short walk over the edge though.

Any thoughts on how things are developing here? A relative of mine was recently attracted to buy some after being out for some years, following some press/TV interview or another. I don't really follow it, but the current discount levels seem fair enough at first glance.
