NFC gathering pace:

SMRT are are a player:

"Multefile™ is not limited in physical form factor either. Not only can it be used in conventional contact and contactless smartcards but also in a variety of other 'smart' devices such as NFC mobile telephones."

NEW INQUIRY: TICKETING ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT

"The use of smart-card technologies for ticketing on public transport is closely linked to the creation of integrated ticketing strategies, allowing passengers an easy and seamless travel experience. In recognition of the importance of integration in modern ticketing technologies, the Government supports ITSO, the Integrated Transport Smartcard Organisation. The question is, is progress happening quickly enough, and are the best possible systems being put in place?"

1st time I have seen you on here bodicea. Good to know someone such as yourself following this one. I agree with the hot money concern. However, you know the market attracts that type in a rising share, sadly.

They have already warned not to expect too much of the interims. Most of the recent developments are quite forward-looking and patience will be required for an eventual good return imo. We don't really need hot money in this one - it just leads to a bumpier ride than necessary - but then again, also good dips for a top-up.

The interims last year were posted on 7th June so presumably it will be a similar date this time round. It seems our patience is now beginning to be rewarded, albeit in a small way.

For interest, the latest stakeholder update on the 2008 implementation of the Concessionary Bus Travel Bill has strengthened the language with which is discusses the likelihood of specifying ITSO. Consultation has been made and framework agreements for tender are likely this month...

"8. The Department is likely to require the new national concessionary travel passes to be in a smartcard format and ITSO compliant. ITSO provides a standard to allow all ITSO compliant smartcards to be able to work with ITSO compliant
readers. Therefore, in order for all concessionary travel passes to be able to work throughout England in areas with smart readers, it is necessary for all TCAs to comply with the ITSO standards, even if their area is not smart."

14. However, because it is highly likely that an ITSO smartcard format will be specified in regulations....

16. In order to identify each pass holder, a unique reference number needs to be
allocated. Under the ITSO standard this is made up of two parts...

It goes on... the full piece is available here:

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/regional/buses/concessionary/
concessionarybustravelbill/listofdocuments/pdfstakebulletno5

For any newcomers, SMRT provide all of the ISAM security modules for ITSO at around £50 a time. One is needed for every reader/terminal/back office. If one considers the size of the UK bus fleet then the eventual revenue to SMRT is likely to top £3m. ISAMs have an estimated 3-5 year lifespan and will then need replacing.

Then there is rail, Oyster compatibility etc....

And that's just ITSO. Hitachi are also bundling SMRTs Multefile software on all of their MULTOS smartcards. Hitachi MULTOS has just been FIPS certified for biometric US Federal use. It is an open standard.

I said following the Hitachi RNS (and before the FIPS news and the latest CBT Bill bulletin) that the I believed the shares deserved to be re-rated to 6.5p Looks like we might slowly be pushing towards that.

Do your research - and don't chase them too high....

Good today by the looks of things. Price heading up on fairly conservative volumes. Piece on Tory integrated transport plans. Remember that Oyster/ITSO compatibility has already been proven in London bus trials and the DfT are continuing to roll it out. Every ITSO compatible Oyster reader will need an ISAM from SMRT.

Oyster card scheme propsed by Tories
Apr 17 2007

icWales

The Tories today said they would entice people out of their cars with public transport tickets based on London's Oyster card.

They said they would offer grants for councils to produce "integrated public transport passes".

Passengers would then be able to use local trains and busses with one ticket.

London's pay-as-you-go Oyster cards are swiped by passengers when they board the city's public transport.

Labour has similar plans to harmonise rail times and tickets with bus services.

The Conservatives promised to invest in rail rolling stock and encourage more car sharing if in power after next month's election.

A sustainable travel demonstration town would be appointed to promote walking and cycling.

The party's Assembly leader Nick Bourne said: "Welsh Conservatives are committed to developing initiatives which persuade more people out of their cars and onto public transport.

"But that must be accompanied with year-on-year improvements in the state of our rail and bus network – and developments which are sensitive to the environment of Wales.

"Developing integrated public transport passes with local councils will form a key part of our proposals to get Wales moving and to tackle environmental issues."

Mr Bourne said he supported Labour's free pensioners' bus pass scheme, hailed by Rhodri Morgan as one of the Assembly's biggest success stories.
