Southern Co. Says Covid-19 Mitigation Efforts May Slow Construction at Vogtle Site

Southern Co. on Wednesday said efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19 "could disrupt or delay construction, testing, supervisory and support activities at Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4," two nuclear power units being built in the state of Georgia.

Efforts to stem the risk of transmission include "worker distancing measures, isolating individuals who are showing symptoms consistent with Covid-19, being tested for Covid-19 or who have been in close contact with such persons, requiring self-quarantine and adopting additional precautionary measures."

The company also said efforts by governments to slow the spread of the coronavirus could result in disruptions to supply chains and reduced availability of labor, among other effects, which may "have a variety of adverse impacts on the company and its subsidiaries, including reduced demand for energy." Such efforts may also impair "the ability of the company and its subsidiaries to develop, construct and operate facilities and to access funds from financial institutions and capital markets."

Southern Co. shares are trading lower on Wednesday. At 11:34 a.m. EDT, the company's stock was down 6.45%, at $50.66 a share.
