Procter & Gamble Co. said it aims to cut greenhouse-gas emissions in half at its direct manufacturing plants for Tide detergents by 2030.
The company on Thursday said Tide in 2020 reduced emissions by more than 75% annually compared with a decade ago.
Tide will work on its emissions-reduction goal through a pilot project with chemical-technology startup Opus12, which has developed a device that recycles carbon dioxide.
The company also said it will start a campaign in the spring to convince North American consumers to shift to cold-water washing. "Tide's ambition is to make cold water washing the industry standard," said Shailesh Jejurikar, P&G's chief executive for fabric and home care.
Tide has struck a multi-year partnership with the Hanesbrands Inc.'s Hanes apparel brand to promote cold-water washing, the company said. The partnership will involve Tide Pods samples and coupons, P&G said.
Tide has also promised to use 100% recyclable packaging for all products by 2030, the company said.
