International stocks trading in New York closed lower on Wednesday.

The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts fell 1.3% to 137.80. The European index decreased 1.3% to 139.30, the Asian index dropped 1% to 142.24, the Latin American index fell 2.5% to 176.17 and the emerging markets index declined 1.6% to 224.21. National Bank of Greece SA (NBG, ETE.AT) was among the companies with ADRs that traded actively.

 

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday called for the European Parliament's involvement in overseeing his country's bailout program, a proposal European officials say is unlikely to win creditor approval but which shows Greece's continuing quest for gentler bailout terms. Earlier Wednesday, Germany's parliament ratified the latest Greek bailout, a major step toward clearing final adoption of the bailout by eurozone finance ministers. ADRs of National Bank of Greece SA (NBG, ETE.AT) rose 3.3% to 83 cents.

 

China Telecom Corp. (CHA, 0728.HK) said its first-half earnings fell 4% from a year earlier as regulatory polices weighed on its results. ADRs fell 1.2% to $53.96.

 

Syngenta AG (SYT, SYNN.VX) plans to divest itself of its Flowers seeds business, aiming to allow the business to takepart in the consolidation of the home gardening market. The Basel-based agricultural seeds and chemicals company is currently resisting a roughly $45 billion takeover attempt by U.S.-based rival Monsanto Co. (MON). Syngenta ADRs fell 43 cents to $80.03.
