Leonardo SpA and BAE Systems Plc said Thursday that they have won a 317-million-pound ($420.6 million) contract to supply the U.K. Royal Air Force with radars for its Typhoon fighter jets.
The Italian aerospace-and-defense company and the British defense company said the contract is to develop Active Electronically Scanned Array radars to be used on RAF Typhoon planes, replacing mechanically-scanning radars currently in use at the air force.
The companies said the contract will sustain more than 600 highly-skilled jobs in the U.K., of which more than 300 at Leonardo's site in Edinburgh, 100 warfare specialists at the company's Luton site and 120 engineers at BAE Systems' Lancashire plant.
The radars, which are also defined as European Common Radar System Mark 2, will give Typhoon planes electronic warfare capability in addition to traditional radar functions, the companies said.
