TBH I don't have a position and am here due to SPD former involvement with Debenhams. Indeed, I don't like shorting as a tool nor can I recall many posters stating they are shorting.
It's not about enjoying the mess SPD is in - it's a fact! I for one don't want to see anyone lose their.jobs (except perhaps some of the senior management here)

Sleep on this!!

1 =Why did SPD not disclose the massive tax bombshell earlier?

2 =Tesco had a blackhole of about 200 million and look what happened to
her share price and Tesco is/was fundamentally strong at the time unlike
SPD.

3= Why were the results delayed by two weeks?

4 = Several years years of decent profits to reapy this tacx bill and other loses only if the co is making a profit and we all know what is happening in the retail sectro, worrying indeed.

5 = If you was a major supplier to SPD, would you want your money up front is the next big problem

4= Most worrying of all, what else may the company trying to hide?

IMO the shares won't dive as much as expected but will end even lower than tomorrows lows at the end of the week when the city fully wakes up to the
incompetence at SPD and shares may even be suspended for a few hours or days imo

DYOR

Regards

PS -TO ADD INULT TO INJURY THE 600 MILLION PLUS TAX WAS ONLY MENTIONED AT THE VERY BOTTOM OF THE REPORT,

The question i would ask is are SPD buying all these companies to hide whats really going on inside SPD, ie smoke and mirrors

I based my opinion on what is normal in the UK there is always an appeal process but don't known what the rules are in Belgium.

I must admit its a strange situation as penalties normally arise after a tax investigation in the UK and a similar procedure and penalty of 200% of tax due and also interest.

It would appear to me the demand may not be a total shock to SPD but a shock to the market and one which the auditors had been speaking to SPD most of the day on Friday.

The question is did the company have any inclination there would be a tax demands the last time they delayed their results a few weeks ago.

They made one of their main excuses at that time the delay was due to the HOF acquisition but its all now very suspicious. Whatever the reason SPD now lost all credibility with brokers analysts, the press and shareholders alike.

Mike Ashley was disliked by the city prior to this shocking revelation he wont have any credibility now.

I would expect heavy trading tomorrow many institutions will want out.

Is SPD owe Belgium 600m and we leave the EU on 31 October, would it not be better for SpD to simply wind up the business there and not pay the bill?

You cannot just wind the business up Sports Direct " The Company" is liable for Belgium tax sales through the company by one way and the other that is why they are landed with a tax bill penalties and interest and bear in mind interest will still accrue up to the day the bill is paid, with the caveat if its indeed determined its legally obliged to pay. At the moment it spears SPD are saying they don't agree with the assessment but there have been cases over here on a different agenda with Sports Stars objecting to tax bills in the UK by placing their money in schemes to avoid tax then being ordered to pay them in the end.

I know the tax demand by the Belgium tax authorities analogy completely different but its a grave matter all the same the company had to warn shareholders of the matter due to the significance of the potential liability.

The fact is the bill is there its demanded, its irrelevant if SPD think they are not liable Belgium authorities think different.

Until it determined SPD don't have to pay the bill, there is a significant liability that cannot be ignored.

In the Express today Nick Bud a retail analyst stated Sports Direct doesn't deserve to be a listed company anymore.

Far from MA taking SPD private, I think the opposite could happen.

It would not surprise me if Ashley is potless and I can't see too many lining up to lend him money right now.

If he really has this tax bill, it could be game over for him and he may have to sell his SPD stake right down and relinquish control of the business.

Must admit, SPD were jogging along quite nicely.
If had been MA, I would have been quite content and been looking to plot my retirement and enjoy my later years.

Would also have thought about SPD paying a small dividend to provide income from my massive shareholding rather than keep spending money buying things.
Then again, I am not MA, lol
