She looks to me like she is easily bought. I bet TB just dangled a big govt credit card in front of her and said she can go on a spending spree in Iraq when it needs rebuilding from the rubble. Cook has put her in a bind imo. Whatever his motives she has now confirmed what we all already know :-politicians are venal and self serving and always on the lookout for a way to manouevre themselves into a better position at the trough. She also happens to be an unsubtle gob on a stick :-)

Reading the Papers this morning - it seems that prime ministership is regarded as an extremely long shot for Cook, as he doesn't have many friends on the back benches.

So, maybe he is looking to position himself for a return to a high cabinet post instead?

Also, after being humiliated by Blair recently over Lords reform, and then slagging blair on a number of occasions, Cook may have feared that he was about to go in the next reshuffle anyway.

So, one way and another, the further you go into his resignation, the less principled it seems.

Nevertheless, he did get a standing ovation for his commons resignation speech.

Clare Short, however, seems to have really blown herself up - initially calling the PM "reckless" on TV and threatening to resign.

But now, she is proving reluctant to actually resign her £125,000 Ministerial job!!

There are , apparently, accusations of hypocrisy and cowardice - though the press doesn't say from who.

My guess would be from Tories, Labour Leadership, and also her mates in Lib Dems/Labour pacifists - i.e. she has managed to get herself ridiculed by just about everyone.

Will she decide to resign even at this late stage, to redeem the remnants of her reputation?

Or will she cling onto that salary and car for a few months longer - before Blair (if he's still around!) takes his revenge in the next reshuffle?

Come the reshuffle he will be dumping a discredited figure of fun, whereas if he had sacked her after her tv outburst she would have become an instant martyr/hero of the left.

She must be kicking herself with big boots right now!

I think he and Clare Short are planning to break away and set up a new non-photogenic party, for all those voters who cannot identify with good-looking politicians. I hear that David Mellor, Ann Widdecombe and Geoffrey Archer might join them.
The Scary Party?

I don't think Robin Cook has been happy ever since some scottish politician dismissed him as "Labour's wee health pixie" some years ago.

Has Robin Cook resigned because he is the kind of guy who puts principles before his career?

Or is he taking the view that his lust for prime - ministership is currently a no-hoper, but that if he is the only senior minister to take a totally contrary position here, and the war goes badly wrong, then he could suddenly be transformed from gnomic also-ran, to the only experienced minister who is not covered in sh*t, and therefore become prime minister by default??

Or maybe a bit of both?
