Nickel mining firm adopts a mountain in Palawan

Berong Nickel Corporation (BNC), a nickel mining conglomerate in southern Palawan engaged in the exploration, development, and mining of nickel laterite deposits, has adopted a mountain in the town of Quezon for a tree planting project as part of its commitment to the environment.

Incorporated in 2004 as a subsidiary of Toledo Mining Corporation (TMC), the BNC, said community relations superintendent Jocelyn Tabuada-Asignacion adopted a mountain in Barangay Berong to be the beneficiary of a tree planting project they recently started with the support of the local government officials of Quezon municipality, barangay officials of Berong, representatives from the academe, civic organizations, and residents living within and outside its awarded mining areas.

Last September 10, the BNC led more than 3,000 participants in the mass planting of trees in a three-hectare piece of land on a mountain in Barangay Berong, just like how it's done by Puerto Princesa during the Pista Y Ang Kageban.

Asignacion narrated that the community event not only succeeded in the implementation of the BNC tree planting project but also in bringing various sectors together to make a pledge to the environment by reviving mountain areas that have been denuded by rampant illegal logging and slash-and-burn farming in the past years.

"What's good about the project is that it has encouraged people in Berong and the municipality of Quezon to join together in making a pledge to revive mountain areas in their community that are denuded," she stated.

Another encouraging result of the activity is a desire by Berong Barangay and Quezon LGU officials to pass an ordinance that would declare September 10 of every year as "Adopt-A-Mountain Day."

"The BNC is happy that with the adopt-a-mountain project, it has inspired people and local government officials to act together to come up with a measure that would greatly contribute to the sustainable protection of their environment," Asignacion added.

Within the year, the BNC hopes to plant an additional seven-hectare area with trees by organizing a monthly community tree planting event.

Asignacion said the BNC's goal is to plant 10-hectares of mountain land in Berong with trees that would be turned over to the local community later on condition that residents will not cut them down.

"The adopt-a-mountain project is a manifestation of the BNC's sincerity to comply with the requirements of the government. More importantly, of course, is the fact that the environment is important to us," she said. (PNA)

Speaking in the same conference, Bao Guo Zhong, vice-president of China's largest nickel company, Jinchuan Group Ltd., said the Philippines is well-positioned to meet the increasing demand for copper and nickel in China. "China's increasing demand for copper and nickel is an advantage to the Philippines, [since it is] rich in these resources," Mr. Zhong said, adding that China imports these metals from the Philippines, Indonesia and New Caledonia.

MANILA, Philippines - MacroAsia Corp. has secured an environmental compliance certificate (ECC) for its Infanta nickel mine in Brooke's Point in Palawan, which covers a total land area of about 1,114 hectares.

The ECC was issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources after a thorough project review and a series of consultations were conducted principally under the supervision of the Environmental Management Bureau.

Discussions continued with MacroAsia on the joint development of the adjoining tenement areas. The nickel laterite deposit extends across the common boundary of the contiguous MPSA areas held by the company and MacroAsia.

Ipilan's JORC compliant resource, of 30.6 million tonnes with an average grade of 1.36% nickel, relates to only 30% of the Ipilan MPSA area and as previously reported, Toledo estimates a total resource of some 77 million tonnes at 1.25% nickel for the total area

MacroAsia in September signed a memorandum of understanding with Toledo Mining Corp., a mining company listed in the
London Stock Exchange, for the joint development of the Infanta and the Celestial nickel projects, both in Brooke's Point,
Palawan. Toledo Mining and affiliates hold the majority interest in the Celestial nickel project.
Under the plan, MacroAsia and Toledo will conduct studies that will cover possible collaboration in mine development and
on-site value added processing. Primarily engaged in aviation-related services, MacroAsia inherited its mining rights from
Cobertson Holdings Corp., formerly Infanta Mineral and Industrial Corp.

Tommo's mate has "form"

England's referee Jorge Larrionda has previous in missing 'goals' and was once suspended for six months by Uruguayan FA
By Matt Fortune
Last updated at 7:23 PM on 27th June 2010

Referee Jorge Larrionda's error in failing to spot that Frank Lampard's first-half shot against Germany had crossed the line has an unnerving sense of familiarity.

The Uruguayan official, once suspended for six months by his country's Football Association for alleged 'irregularities', was at the centre of a World Cup storm in South America six years ago for just the same reason.

In a key qualifying clash between Brazil and Columbia, Larrionda deprived the world champions a winner midway through the second half when a close-range effort from substitute striker Adriano bounced down off the underside of the crossbar and landed half a metre behind the line.

It caused disbelief as much as did anger among the players and fans yet the man in the middle was still selected to officiate at the 2006 World Cup.

In this year's tournament, where he has refereed three games, Larrionda has already attracted criticism for his failure to spot Tim Cahill's clear handball for Australia which ultimately cost Serbia a place in the last 16.

Last, but by no means least, Simon Purkiss of European Nickel stepped up to the podium. European Nickel has had its ups and downs, but there's never been a shortage of things to say about the company, which has been working up nickel project in Turkey for many years. A long-cherished forestry permit was finally granted not so long ago, only to be temporarily revoked again by a local judge. The company is now waiting for a new law to be signed off by the Turkish president. Meanwhile, it's merged with Rusina, and Rusina chief Rob Gregory will take up the lead operations role, as the company pushes on with the development of its Turkish and Philippine projects.

Hovering around in the background, but happy to talk over beer and sandwiches at lunch was Reg Eccles, of Toledo, London's other listed nickel laterite developer. There's no further merger on the cards as regards Toledo and European Nickel, reckons Reg, and the appearance of Toledo's newly appointed chief operating officer, Ken Stein, by his side seemed to go some way towards confirming that view.
