I am an active investor and look out for potential recovery plays and long-established companies. Not all my investments pay dividends as l may favour capitals gains in recovery plays. I only look to the FTSE100 and FTSE250 for my picks to reduce risk of losing my money. That means no fledging, small caps and absolutely no AIM stocks (it’s a real punters market with many companies yet to make a maiden profit).

I tend to build positions in stocks in blocks. For example, l may set aside 25% of 10% cash on a stock and increase the holding as the share price drops (volatility of the stock determines the price). If the share price moves up beyond break even l abandon building the stock and look to new stocks or add to weakening positions until l have exhausted my budget.

I aim to make a modest 10% return on the portfolio and my current average yearly return to date is 15.0% since 2008 outside my ISA (which I’m trading less over the years) and 9.45% inside my ISA since 2009 (which I’m trading more over the years). I tend to hold stocks for weeks, months or years. I like dividends especially if I’m holding a position long term (if you’re holding a position at a loss for some time a dividend is really appreciated!). I may exit profit positions by year end. I may carry over loss positions over to the next financial year and regularly do so. I may take losses against profits to reduce CGT or if I’ve lost faith in the company. If possible, l like to exit a portfolio if in profit overall but this is rare if I’m being honest. I have yet to record a YoY loss using this strategy because l do move negative positions into next financial year (which l hope to eventually exit in profit). My returns are slow but steady and that’s fine by me. Last updated 27/02/2018.
