I am an active investor and look out for potential recovery plays and long-established companies. Not all investments pay dividends as l may favour capitals gains in recovery plays.
I tend to build positions in stocks. For example, l may set aside 25% of 10% cash on a stock and increase the holding as the share price drops (volatility of the stock determines the price). If the share price moves up beyond break even l abandon building the stock and look to new stocks or add to weakening positions until l have exhausted my budget.
I aim to make a modest 10% return on the portfolio and my current average yearly return to date is 15.3% since 2008 outside my ISA (which I’m trading less over the years) and 9.19% inside my ISA since 2009 (which I’m trading more over the years because gains are tax free). I tend to hold stocks for days, weeks, months or years. I like dividends especially if I’m holding a position long term. I may exit profit positions by year end. I may carry over loss positions to the next financial year and regularly do so. I may take losses against profits to reduce CGT or if I’ve lost faith in the company. If possible, l like to exit a portfolio if in profit overall but this is rare if I’m being honest. I have yet to record a YoY loss using this strategy because l move negative positions into next financial year (which l hope to eventually exit in profit). My returns are slow but steady.
