25/4/2024 21:06 | Portfolio +0.56%. big thanks to AAL +15% and good results rises for AZN and ULVR…….. Still 20c here at 10pm local time. City Tour bus broke down at the port area this morning resulting in a five mile walk back to the hotel ☺️ϒ | philanderer
25/4/2024 19:23 | I'm down -0.534% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.479%). Worst falls: LGEN -6.36% XD, BA. -3.19% and ADM -23.60%. Best rises: AZN +5.94%, ULVR +5.67% and IMB +1.27%. A funny old day with those two huge rises from AZN and ULVR on their quarterly reports. They did the index more good than my portfolio. Just back from our weekly curry at Wetherspoons. A bit of rain in the air still. I did a brief spell in the garden this afternoon, dead heading my narcissii, and it was spotting then. DF | deanforester
25/4/2024 18:37 | Hernia's, there's another one I've heard lots of people mentioning about having had/got.. so far so good on that front I think! Hope tomorrow goes OK 👍 | carpingtris
25/4/2024 18:12 | carpringtris - talking of Jaws, I'm attending the funeral of a life long friend next week. I remember in the late 1970s, he had a hiatus hernia - where as now the operation is very straight forward (keyhole), back then he ended up with a scar shaped like a shark bite which was the width of his back | skinny
25/4/2024 17:56 | What causes stomach ulcers? Stomach ulcers occur when the layer protecting the stomach lining from stomach acid breaks down. This allows the stomach lining to become damaged. This is usually caused by: an infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or aspirin – particularly if they’re taken for a long time or at high doses There’s little evidence that stress or certain foods causes stomach ulcers. And Reflux :- | skinny
25/4/2024 17:53 | All this talk of our wounds is reminding me of a scene from Jaws. | carpingtris
25/4/2024 17:52 | I thought specialist antibiotics worked on stomach ulcers these days. Are you all talking about ulcers that are resistant? (Never seen this thread as animated!) | aleman
25/4/2024 17:51 | Sounds nasty! Glad you've got things under control now. One of the worst pains I've had was an ear abscess.. couldn't do anything till it popped deep within my ear.. a week of antibiotics were required. 20 odd years ago. Can't wait to see what else gets thrown at me as I get older! | carpingtris
25/4/2024 17:42 | carpingtris - I wouldn't wish that pain on my worst enemy so to speak. The specialist that I saw @1999/2000, wouldn't let me keep the photo of my ulcers - otherwise I would have posted it for you :-))) For info :- Grade 0 – The stomach lining is in tact and there is no yellowing present. Grade 1 – The stomach lining is in tact but there are areas of yellowing. Grade 2 – There are small single or multiple superficial ulcers. Grade 3 – There are large single or multiple superficial ulcers. Grade 4 – There are extensive ulcers with areas of deep ulceration. Mine were Grade 3. | skinny
25/4/2024 17:33 | I see my talk of indigestion has sparked an interesting discussion.. I've wondered at times if I've had/got an ulcer in or near my stomach? Find I struggle with cheese and chocolate now without having issues in the past... oh and beer.. Maybe one day I'll get it looked at rather than just a phone call! Luckily the symptoms aren't the gnawing feeling I once had and only tend to take any indigestion tablets near nighttime if I've eaten late. Plenty to digest today! ;) | carpingtris
25/4/2024 17:29 | +0.1%. Would have been worse without INCH rising 8% on its Q1 update - but it should have done that after the FY results, when it fell. Several weeks on and it's now over 25% higher than that low. Sellers will be kicking themselves. Glad it was not me for a change. My brief walk coincided with the sun starting to play out. I'd gone full winter (4 layers plus hat, scarf, gloves) thinking I might sit outside the local cafe for lunch but it was too cold even if the sunny spells were ok. I did have a very nice BLT sat inside though. The temperature in our garden shot up to the glorious heights of 11.0C later, after 1.4C, but it was only about 6C on my jaunt. I was breathless when I got home, which I think is just down to swelling which will abate in a day or two. So it's the bought quiches for tonight to make life easier. The Goodfellas Salt and Pepper Chicken pizzas we had last night for the first time got a mixed reception. I coped with the oddly strong fennel seedy 5-spice seasoning, but a couple of kids did not so I doubt we'll get them again. I think we prefer a more Italian style of thin pizza with more healthy stuff on than the typical doughy American/Pizza Hut/Goodfellas style. | aleman
25/4/2024 17:02 | Wish it was an all time closing high for my SIPP! | mrphil
25/4/2024 16:59 | That's the worry MrP - I've been on it for at least 20 years and Zoton before that. I would love to stop taking it, but as I said, if I miss a day, I start to feel the reflux pain again. I finished down 0.35%. I believe that's an all time closing high on the FTSE @8,078.86 after hitting 8,105.59 earlier. | skinny
25/4/2024 16:57 | A poor day for me, -0.65% Only 5 meaningful blues,SNR,TBLD.ULTP, Worst fallers AVON,RR.,BHP,LGEN,HF | malcolm caton
25/4/2024 16:52 | If it was possible to see a GP, I might try and discuss whether I actually still need to take the stuff as it was originally prescribed to take with the Meloxicam which I hardly ever take now. Like many drugs it is suggested not to take it long term but I haven't been reviewed since it was first prescribed probably over ten years ago! That's why I have started to cut down and would love to stop it altogether but I'm just worried something could flare up if I stop completely. | mrphil
25/4/2024 16:48 | I may well do that - I hadn't realised that it was available over the counter - again, thanks. | skinny
25/4/2024 16:44 | You can just get Esomerprazole off the shelf in tescos and most other supermarkets. May be worth trying it yourself for a couple of weeks - quicker than waiting for a GP and its not expensive. Finished up about 0.4% - BARC/ULTP/KITW best performers. I sold some of the latter as its become too large. VLX/AV/MEGP(xd) biggest fallers. Four good days for me. I'll add in my dividends at the end of this week, should boost the total by around 0.3% My biggest payouts actually fall next month. | dr biotech
25/4/2024 16:43 | Thanks for that DrB, I have seen Nexium and assumed it was much the same as Omeprazole, but clearly not. Not a great day for my lot, -0.91% SBRY, HFEL & LGEN so it wasn't just the xd's doing damage today. | mrphil
25/4/2024 16:40 | Interesting comparison chart Skinny. Folio -0.54% [FTSE All-Share +0.28%] Heaviest fallers, BA. recovered from intraday low, LGEN (xd), BHP, GSF. CMCX, SDV, the only material gainers. Temp hovered around 8C all day after 1C. Sun appeared for 5 mins. | blueliner
25/4/2024 16:09 | Thanks for that Dr Bio and I'm sure you are correct about the side effects. I'll mention it the next time I speak (ha ha) to my doctor. The FTSE seems very resilient today. Here's a comparison chart you don't often see :- | skinny
25/4/2024 15:39 | Well I was up 1% at lunchtime, close to zero now. Bit of chemistry - omeprazole contains two stereoisomers (they have the same parts but are different, a bit like your right and left hands). These are an "R" and "S" form. Its cheaper to make a mixture containing both. Apparently only the "R" form is active, the "S" form is supposedly non active, but may cause some side effects in certain cases. Esomeprazole is only the R form - in theory this is better as it contains only the active ingredient, so you would need a lower dose and there are no side effects from the "S" form. There are several generic makers - Nexium being the original name - guardium another brand. I just buy the generic. If you think omerprazole is giving you some unpleasant side effects, taking esomeprazole would be a worthwhile alternative. | dr biotech
25/4/2024 14:58 | Awful day for my lot, positive territory now a distant memory! | mrphil
25/4/2024 14:54 | Global shares tanking because Meta decide to spend more capex on AI? Or was it weak US GDP? WPP results today showed North America was the problem market but I've been saying this of numerous international company results for months. China and India are the big drivers these days, anyway. (India's population has now officially overtaken China as I suggested previously.) | aleman
25/4/2024 14:23 | USA has had 25mph urban speed limits for non-trunk roads for decades. Meanwhile, in the UK .... | aleman
25/4/2024 11:50 | Something I just noticed from March's ONS retail sales figures was volume +0.8% and sales +3.3% means prices were only +2.5%. Inflation in CPI is allegedly a problem that needs to keep rates high yet the retail sales figures almost seem to disagree. I was thinking this morning how few company results show any sign of inflation any more and we had several last month indicating deflation was expected over the summer. Are we running damaging high interest rate policy for nothing much? Some economists are still suggesting CPI will hit 2% or lower in May (reported June). | aleman |
