This way they get far more ALS and (I believe)a guaranteed annual income over the period of the lease, which currently could extend to 80 years and they get the land back when the lease expires and they get a (limited)say in the proposed development. All that compares to one receipt on the sale of the land.

If the land ever really was worth 10's, possibly 100's of millions of pounds developed and the monastery wanted to cash it in why didn't they just flog it in the first place?
