National Milk Records was incorporated in 1997 having formerly been part of the Milk Marketing Board. The main business of the company involves the collection of milk samples from dairy cows, the recording of data regarding the animals such as milk yields, calving, and dry periods, laboratory analysis focusing on fat content, protein and somatic cell count, and the provision of information to the farmer about the individual animal and the herd. This information is used to assist the farmer in improving the efficiency of milk production.
