Seeing as KEY have just sent out the tender offer I thought I would see if they were other shareholders here that have views on whether to tender shares or keep them.

Helpful idea from Halfax insurance - they issue you with a free personalised key fob to attach to your keys - anyone handing them in to Halifax or the police when you lose them gets £10 from Halifax - 90% recovery rate they say.

In '98 was Branch Manager of a finance company in Leeds, with a Fleet of six cars at the branch.

Being a disciplined sort of chap I put the spare Keys for each vehicle in seperate envelopes with the vehicle registration number on each envelope, and placed all in the Branch safe (in a 'secret' cupboard encased in concrete).

You've guessed it, safe Kangoed out one night, Transport department insisted on our local dealer replacing all the lock sets on the cars. Cost the Branch about £2k.

Still got the old lock sets and the keys.............

my son lost the keys to his nova this week,lock kit from vauxhalls
(thats ign,two doors, boot & new petrol cap lock) £47.45 i paid of course and about one hour to fit.

Cost me £85 for a new key to my Lupo so this applies to VW too..

Like the ending, I have the Wife on search duty, as on Thursday the car goes to the dealers and we get 2 new keys that gives us 3, so any future loss can be replaced at 15 quid a shot. The lesson is you must not get below 2 keys or you have to pay for a recode on a FORD.

My tale of woe.....

We get new vans delivered to us and do our work on them before they go to the dealer for preparation and delivery to the end user.

We had a batch of Renault Kangoos and lost the keys for one of them. I called our local dealer for a replacement and he said that there was no problem, just call in with the registration document, to prove ownership, and they would get one ordered from Paris. "Hang on" says I, "this is a new van that isn't registered yet so we have no paperwork other than the delivery note from Renault". He says "Sorry, no document - no key".

I then spent half a day on the phone to the Renault import centre in Southampton, being passed from person to person before they eventually gave me the key number.

Back to the dealer. "Is it remote locking?" says he. I replied in the affirmative to be told that in that case they need the remote serial number. (This remote is enclosed in the key)

Another half day on the phone to Renault, got the remote number and passed it on to the dealer.

"Excellent" says he, "I'll order the new key from Paris and it will be here in a fortnight". "Grrrrr" says I.

Fortunately the customer is understanding, they have thousands of vans, and just says deliver it when you can.

Ten days pass in which this sodding van is sitting in my car park, immobile, and is always in the way.

The dealer rings to say that the key has arrived and that they will deliver it that afternoon. Five minutes later I put an old coat on, stick my hand in the pocket, and guess what I pull out. I don't need to tell you do I?

So, a fortnight wasted, much aggravation, and a bill for £95.00 for a key we didn't need.

I seem to recall a 'Watchdog' programme, a couple of years ago, exposing exactly this sort of duplicate key rip off! Where the price could vary horribly from dealer to dealer.

Any Ford Dealership I am in the midlands, Can, t imagine even london mark up costing that much.

A few things though might depend on age of car and has the car got remote locking, the key fob might be a bit dearer on remote lock not £300 though.

I cant see why 400 quid unless they intend to replace the engine controler
which is rare. A new set of locks, No they can cut from the key they have.
Or just a plain rip off.

I was told £56 + VAT for the work. 3 year old FORD Ka

Try losing a Mercedes key and you will have to take out a Mortgage to replace it.
Thats why I drive a Trabant ! Check out the ignition... No key just on and off buttons. Cost me a bit extra for the stylish Upholstery... but whats a few extra Roubles Komrads

Can you give me the name of the garage/establishement that quoted you £90 and I'll pass it onto the lady who's been quoted £400, apparantly she has a Ford as well. Cheers.

£90!....I was told last week of someone who has just been quoted £400!!! to replace a key, apparantly this is because the lady in question only had one key for the car! Still sounds like a total rip off though.

But it's a bit of a worry, cause I've only got one key for my car! ;(

You want to get a new one cut, still have a spare, they can copy that you think, no problem. Wrong you need two keys that fit your car already, in order to make a spare.
The Issue is the vehicle key has an electronic chip inside; this is read when the key is used. Each chip is unique and the key has its own cut as well

The engine management ECU has to be reprogrammed if you only have one key. Dealers claim an hour's labour for that circa £75 inc vat. . I am talking about the Ford engine immobiliser system in this case but it might apply to other manufactures as well.
To supply and cut a new key to fit the lock costs just £15 and you can programme it to your car yourself from the instructions in the handbook.

So if you knew that when you picked up the car you would order a 3rd key for £15 and save £ 75 if you lost one.

Yes it just happened to Mrs Eq's 3-year-old Ford Ka.
