Professor says bras are useless
April 11, 2013
BRAS do nothing to help support a woman's breasts and could even be doing damage.

Professor Jean-Denis Rouillon of Besançon CHU found in a 15-year study of 330 women that "medically, physiologically and anatomically" breasts gained no benefit from their weight being supported in a bra.

Breasts would gain more tone and support themselves if no bra was used. Using a bra meant "supporting tissues will not grow and even they will wither and the breast will gradually degrade".

Some of the women who took part in the experiment told France Info that stopping using a bra had even helped ease back pains.

However, Prof Rouillon said: "It would be dangerous to advise all women to stop wearing their soutien-gorge as the women involved were not a representative sample of the population."

He said his initial results "validated the hypothesis that the bra is a false 'need'" but women who had been wearing bras for a long time would not gain a benefit from stopping now.

Prof Rouillon has been carrying out his experiment since 1997; measuring and examining their breasts to study the effects of living without the support of a bra.

He said a principle observation was that the nipple would lift 7mm in a year towards the shoulder in those women not wearing a bra. The breast would also become firmer and stretch-marks faded. He suggested that girls who started wearing a bra once their breasts first started to appear would soon become dependent as the supporting muscle structure would degrade.

Bullet-proof bras for German police

German police women are to be issued with bullet-resistant bras.

The new underwear was developed as a second barrier of defence after normal bras were found to cause injuries while on duty, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The officers' bullet-proof vests, while stopping the force of gunshots in an attack, pushed the plastic and metal parts of their underwear into their flesh.

Carmen Kibat, a policewoman in Hamburg who tested the new underwear, said: "These can save someone's life so it's not a laughing matter."

She organised "Action Brassiere" across Germany, getting hundreds of policewomen to try the bras out in the line of duty.

They are all emblazoned with the word "police" and made from cotton, polyester, elastic and some other synthetic materials, thickly padded and with no metal or plastic studs or fasteners.

Three thousand front-line women police officers will now be required to wear the bras on duty. Their bosses have decided to allow them to have three each.

Ruediger Carstens, a spokeswoman for the police, said: "This was pioneering work. The safety of our officers is paramount."

Chopsticks bra unveiled

A 'chopsticks bra' has been unveiled in Japan for busy women looking to stash their eating utensils whilst on the go.

Bra maker Triumph International is pushing the green message with a bra it hopes will cut down on disposable chopsticks.

The 'My Hashi Bra' (or My Chopstick Bra) comes with collapsible chopsticks stashed inside the body of the brassiere.

According to the company they are compact and form part of the bra's frame.

Triumph spokesperson Hiromi Shinta said: "Its small step, but because many Japanese chopsticks are disposable, big chunks of forests are being cut down. So we thought we could help promote the use of 'My Chopsticks' and help cut down on disposable chopsticks."

Chopsticks were first used in China nearly 4,000 years ago and first went disposable in Japan about 130 years ago.

People in Japan throw away an estimated 25 billion pairs of wooden chopsticks every year, although many of these are made from recycled wood chips.
