No-one fancy a weekend in Bombay? don't blame you .

If! the West can't handle its current markets crisis there will be no cash to hold back the goths ( ie, the Al-K , the Taliban .) so the Bank bosses better remember this: they were playing dice with our principles and our ability to hold back the people who can do big damage. You were playing bingo with the money to put a soldier in the field out there. OK Gordon's Alastair can print more, but we know its not gonna deliver the same hardware etc.
At least I will have the personal satisfaction of confronting my local Al-K representative with a sharpened hill walking stave in the eye if he ever comes near here.
Off I go, then. Lastly I am sorry but all these banking bosses - should be stuck in front of a grand jury for grand larceny.
Also local bank managers should have to deliver cash to small businesses personally, in wheelbarrows. In bare feet. Well its better than street gallows . Thats for a later post I hope I never have to post.
Sorry, if this post reached you thanks to my 4th glass of plonk. I very rarely do this. No appols.

Sea and Sky,

As BNC shares are quoted on the LSE and in Madrid I believe they qualify to be held in an Self Select Shares ISA. Spain was accepted by our IR in 1971.

I am also in a similar position to yourself with Barclays. I expect Barclays to eventually credit me with one third BNC share holding

Funny thing is a lot of the shorters on the banking stocks are now the banks themselves, how ironic is that???

On Friday, A&L will be acquired by Banco Santander, the Spanish bank that already owns Abbey and is buying B&B's savings business and branches.

Then, A&L's 500,000-plus shareholders will receive one Santander share for every three A&L shares. This is a good deal based on Friday's close: A&L shares were at 304p and Santander at €15.65 (£12.19).

Under Spanish law, dividends will be taxed at 18%. British basic-rate taxpayers can apply for a 3% refund through a Spanish tax representative or "gestoria". They would pay 15%, compared with the 10% they usually pay. Higher-rate taxpayers are charged 32.5% on dividends and would have to pay the difference of 14.5% to HM Revenue & Customs.

"The allure of joining the share register of what may be seen one of Europe's up-and-coming financial institutions may be strong, but some will not want to inherit the awkward tax situation that comes with owning part of a Spanish-registered business," said Hugo Shaw at the broker Bestinvest.

Note: I read somewhere that the new BNC shares will be listed on the LSE when the conversion takes place

Thanx Selbourne edge.Did you see the Sunday times article?
It stated quiet clearly that Santander shares were 15eu and they worked that out to be £12.00.
I was ready to invest my life savings !
Through advfn I only found Santander on the NYSE.

I think that the Symbol for Santander is 'BNC' and the share price currently stands at 908.5 p. I purchased a small number of AL. shares last week and I am fairly sure that they will be converted into Santander shares in due course.

Santander have made an absolute killing from AL and B+B, millions of new desposit customers and all backed by the Bank of England should they withdraw, its almost a spanish invasion. I imagine when the dust settles and the investors reflect, the winners from this crisis will be clear to see, but its going to take a few months.
