22/4/2010 19:59 | 8:34 am, April 21, 2010 Sunrise seeks to take advantage of increased barite demand Macclesfield-based exploration company Sunrise Diamonds (AIM:SDS) said the results from a preliminary testing programme at the Derryginagh barite mine in Ireland were positive. In a statement to the stock exchange, Sunrise said it is targeting the Derryginagh barite deposit for the production of high-value white barite for use as a mineral filler in paints and plastics. Barite is the mineral form of barium sulphate. The next stage of work will be to access the dry upper levels of the old mine workings previously mined between1864 and 1922 - to collect larger representative samples for more detailed test work. It is hoped the results will enable the company to design a low cost plant for the production of saleable barite concentrate. Sunrise's chairman Patrick Cheetham welcomed the results, saying: "Our concept for Derryginagh is for a modest-sized underground mining operation feeding a low cost gravity separation plant producing high-value product. "We believe that such an operation can be set up at a relatively low capital cost and produce valuable cash flow for the company." Sunrise is hoping to take advantage of an increase in demand for white paint-grade barite in Europe. There is currently no major mine supply outside of China and India and as a result Sunrise said there is a niche opportunity for a new European supplier as China's own internal demand limits traditional exports. The price currently quoted for white paint grade barite is between £195 and £220 a tonne delivered in the UK. Initial tests at Derryginagh produced a very high-grade barite concentrate that exceeds the required chemical specification for the purest and highest value white filler grades of barite. Colour testing, carried out by an existing buyer of filler grade barite, was also favourable. Barite is an environmentally friendly, non-toxic natural product, which is used as an industrial filler in paints, plastics, brake linings and acoustic panels. It is also used as a weighting agent in oil industry drilling muds. It is chemically and physically unreactive, has a high specific gravity, and low oil adsorption. | buywell2 | |
