New companies in our portfolio would probably include AEG, BHRD, BOO & RTHM. BOO is in some sort of Sweet Spot currently but it may be that its progress is akin to the first flush of growth and it may well catch a crab before too long. RTHM is arguably a recovery stock in that it is a revamped version of BLNX which now seems to have potential.

Arguably, we should now sell all 4 stocks and replace with Sweet Spotters!

Healthcare... Like look of CTEC, joined FTSE100 in December, replacing POLYNot the most glamorous of businesses, but could work it's way slowly north to 300pHas an experienced management team. With changing World demographics, they have a growing Market. On my watch list.

Gold... Like the look of POLY which had a brief 3 months in the FTSE100, before being demoted in December. Has large reserves of silver in addition to gold. Though may just add to CEY on share weakness.

Financials..... When I sold out of STAN and put the money in HSBA, both seem to have done equally as well, so selling STAN was the correct move as far as I can see. Would still like more in Financials though, and would be tempted to buy STAN if it retraces quite a bit. It has a lot of debt which concerns me though. Have considered AV. but it seems to be a perennial underachiever, mind you it has had a good run recently. Do like CBG which you highlighted a while back. Seems like a very well run company, and could be tempted to make a purchase and build a sizeable holding on any share weakness.

SMP - was ready to make a purchase tomorrow, but looking at the charts and also recently, unless results are fab, shares seem to get marked down. So I'm waiting for results. Lots of potential, but a bit concerned about anything to do with Property in the UK. Think there is more opportunity here for growth though than MARS, whose sector i have decided has too many issues to overcome.

Will track SMP from now on as very interesting. share price was 734p back in Apr 2007 and then dropped to 66.25p in Mar 2009. Rallied to 499.4p in 2015 and was then Brexited down to 218.1p on 7 Jul 2016.

Since then it has rallied 48.0% to Thursday's interim high of 322.7p. It could well move up further short-term especially if the Covent Garden Market site attracts further interest. Digital Look's pre-tax profit forecast of £54.97m also looks undemanding and I like the fact that its residential building is growing well.

However, I may wait for Tuesday's finals and hope it slips back closer to 300p before considering a purchase...will decide tomorrow.

What are you going to do, Gateside?

SMP does look good value but I have been very disappointed with the performance of Real Estate companies especially since the Referendum result and I consequently abandoned our holding in BLND last November.

However, I think you may have identified a good 'un and I'm going to put it under the microscope right now.

Just seems odd that TUI dividend paid just once a year. Quite a big dividend too, might create another good buying opportunity.

Sorry, I am not familiar with the typical dividend policy of European companies.

TUI have Q1 results and AGM on 14th February. They also go ex dividend then too.I note they only pay a Final Dividend. Is that common for European companies to just pay a Final dividend? Or it might just be TUI's policy. So there may be a few up and downs which could lead to a new entry point. I would like to build a larger holding in them.

Incidentally, I may well have slipped up by selling TUI too early @ 1158.2p...looks set fair for c1231p short-term...I wasn't happy with Thomson's negligence @ Sousse and thought it might have a greater impact on the company than it seems to have had.

I sold out of STAN @ 789.2p and thought I'd done well (having re-bought @ 660.7p) and a bit surprised to see it move up further to 805.1p (so far). It has now put in 3 Segments of gains since the 11 Feb 2016 low of 373.4p. The first (373.4p:598p) accrued 60.1%, the second (476.75p:672.2p) picked up 41.00% and now the third (599.1p:????) has, so far, notched 34.4%. Assuming it gets to about 820p before its next Segmental correction, I would hope to be able to re-buy @ c683.5p which would be a fairly standard c(61.80%) fullish give back. It will then probably put in a fourth Segment of perhaps c33.00% leading to c909p before the general market puts in its Phase correction which would see it drop back below its last Segmental base (c683.5p) and maybe below 599.1p as well.

Certainly worth a shot below 700p in the first instance, IMHO, but I certainly wouldn't chase it now until it has corrected.

pat... what price would you buy STAN back at?Invisage, you have a similar strategy to me, in searching for quality businesses and holding onto them long term. After the strength of my portfolio last year. I wouldn't be surprised at all, if you both performed better than me this year. Sold out if tobacco, due to more stringent health laws around the world, maybe it was a wrong decision who knows. The Directors buys in BMS have left me tempted, but will leave alone for now. pat... I held GNK ages ago, and take your point about uphill struggles that the sector faces.

BTW, Gateside, we also made a bit on 7 of the 8 companies we sold at the end of last week (BOY, IAG, IWG, RR., RTO, STAN & TUI) and PAG had done well during the back end of 2016.

Invisage, thx for replying anyway! I'll just continue to keep an eye on them then.

Pat

Sorry I did not realize you asked me for my top 3 picks. If I am honest I don't know.

My largest individual stocks are Tobacco and Healthcare. My view is long term these two sectors are winners.

Predicting where certain stocks are going to go is difficult, it is hard to call market/stock moves imo. I just try and pick very good companies with outstanding fundamentals, my view is if I can do this then over the long term my portfolio will be fine.

I avoid companies with large debt piles, I want my companies to be growing earnings, I try not to overpay for my companies. I try to think of my stocks as real businesses and daily how they are making money, I want to be holding my stocks long term - I don't like a great business to be taken over because it is very difficult to find a great business.

ABF is a great business, making money everyday regardless of what I am doing. The market values the business differently from time to time but as long as people keep drinking Twinings and they keep shopping at Primark then the business will be fine in the long term regardless of what Mr Market chooses to value the company at from time to time.

On the whole I think it is difficult to beat the market over the long term consistently which is why I hold a large portion of my portfolio in trackers. Effectively by owning the FTSE 100 I own the best 100 companies in the UK - Can't get better than that in the long term imo.

Assuming FTSE makes it to c7276 next week, I am trying to decide whether to bank gains by either eliminating some of our individual companies or reduce on the Trackers.

I actually think its about Evens that FTSE will put in a third principal wave and, over the next few weeks, move past 7354 so I will probably only reduce our overall investment by about (05.00%-10.00%) to between 55 and 60%. It will depend on the perceived strength of the rally.

It may mean selling between 5 and 10 companies and these should be heavyweights wherever possible which are largely covered by the Trackers anyway.

Curious to know which shares have performed well for you so far this year? There is obviously some sectors I'm missing out on that are doing well.Early days and plenty of time for my portfolio to do well this year.Looked more into MARS and also GNK and both look interesting.

Portfolio actually +0.66% YTD

BVIC paid dividend today, DTG paid on 1st and STOB paid 20/01 which I did not prev take into account with performance.

Portfolio has been bouncing up and down this week, I was down YTD -1.2% only 3 days ago.

No way I could have traded whole portfolio to catch that +1.8% performance the past 3 days....

Early days still, Gateside.

Are you getting tempted to scale back on Resource stocks and diversify a bit more?
