India set to be largest collector of cord blood
October 19, 2011
DC Hyderabad
India will become the largest collector of umbilical cord blood in the world thanks to its vast genetic diversity and high number of births every year. Scientists say that blood from the cord is the natural source of stem cells for treatment of genetic and rare diseases. Since India records about 3 crore births every year, preserving the blood from the cord is easier. India has about 12 cord blood banks, including three in the public sector that can provide cord blood to even unrelated people and non-donors.
According to S. Jayesh of the Foundation for Research in Genetics and Endocrinology, "India's booming birth rate and genetic diversity will help it emerge as the largest collector of umbilical cord blood in the world." There are already about 50,000 samples in the country. He said about 70 per cent of patients of Indian origin, who require bone marrow transplants, do not find a match within their own family.
Therefore, unrelated umbilical cord blood is the only source of progenitors for haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. "However, till date the total number of umbilical cord blood transplants performed in India has been very low mainly due to the high cost of the procedure and limited number of places that have the facility to preserve the stem cell or perform such surgeries," he added. The country needs as many as 30,000 units.
While the general public has access to the public sector cord blood banks, the private cord blood banks provide service to the donors. Though the demand for cord blood has been on the rise lately, there are no ethical guidelines in place to deal with any possible cases of negligence in the future.
In addition the accreditation of these units has largely been voluntary and only 20 per cent of the existing units in the country are affiliated to internationally renowned bodies. The country does not have a public policy governing the functioning of these units.

VindonWestech was looking for a new office sign behind the reception area of their new office. To achieve the look of a professional and intricate sign, we used aluminum stand-offs with a clear piece of acrylic with mounted cut acrylic letters. This is a high impact sign that the client was more than happy with.

... Vindon are looking at further overseas expansion and Liam commented to AimZine that any further acquisition would be subject to careful scrutiny and only if the price is right. Liam did comment that prices for acquisitions, both at home and overseas, are now at a much more reasonable level than they have been in recent years. As for which countries are of particular interest, the Directors would consider a second purchase in the US and would be also interested in certain European countries such as Belgium and Switzerland where there is a strong pharmaceutical presence. ....

Ilika plc - Altrika participates in development of new Stem Cell Collection Service, Oristem®
06 Jun 2011
Ilika plc is pleased to announce the involvement of Altrika Ltd, its wholly owned subsidiary, in the Oristem® stem cell bank, a significant new medical breakthrough involving the collection and storage of stem cells from adults.
The Oristem® service has been developed through a partnership between Altrika, Pharmacells Limited and Vindon Scientific Limited. Pharmacells has licensed a new, patented method of harvesting, isolating and storing stem cells derived from adult blood. Vindon is a recognised leader in temperature and humidity controlled storage and its state of the art storage facility for human tissue and cells will aid both Altrika and Oristem® in this new and exciting field.
Altrika is a cell therapeutics company specialising in the fields of wound treatment and skin regeneration. As one of the few commercial organisations with experience of both cell processing and advanced therapies, Altrika's involvement in this key step of the Oristem programme will ensure that the samples received from clients are handled with the greater care and processed to the level required for future use in treatment.
Previous forms of stem cell extraction had been confined to neo-natal stem cells taken from umbilical cords and immediately stored, or more invasive sources such as fat tissue or bone marrow. The concept of stem cells from adult blood is very new and represents an important development in the possible treatment of illnesses that adults may contract in the future.
The Oristem® product offers a customised stem cell collection system that enables adults to be visited at home for blood samples to be taken. A bespoke, temperature controlled collection kit is used and the blood samples are processed using the patented method, ultimately ending up with the frozen storage of two samples of multipotent adult stem cells. If a new stem cell based treatment for a particular disease has been developed, the client will have healthy, younger cells available to form the basis of a personalised, regenerative therapy or treatment. It thus represents a form of medical investment on the part of individuals wishing to maximise their chances of recovery from future illnesses. .... ....
