Added a list of major holders & directors to the scroll box, and tried to find out who's behind the nominee accounts, which wasn't very easy.Underwood probably owns over 4% now, but I'll update that when the RNS comes out.Any discrepancies, please let me know. What I can't understand is why they don't just do a private cross trade? Perhaps they couldn't agree on a price, and had a dispute? In any case, they gave the MMs an easy £3,750 today for nothing. When 3i declared they no longer had a notifiable holding, the most they could have had then was just under 5%. Subtract yesterday's 1m, and we can guess 3i still have anything between 0 and 5,435,000 shares, which I assume Underwood is happy to mop up.

I think that this can be interpreted as an extremely positive signal. Sigma has been involved with Vianet since pre-IPO, and if Mr Underwood is connected with Sigma (as he would appear to be) it stands to reason that he too has been involved with Vianet for as long as them. If he is increasing his stake now, after watching it drift towards oblivion for over 4 years, then there may be something in the wind.

VIANET GROUP PLC ('the Company')

Holding in Company

The Company was notified on 9 September 2004 by 3i plc that 3i European
Technology Trust plc has ceased to have a notifiable interest in the ordinary
shares of 5p each in the issued share capital of Vianet Group plc.

END

It seems that 3i wanted to make an exit, and Mr. Underwood was there to mop them up.

The trades appear to cancel themselves out, so I'm not quite sure why the price still rose so much. Perhaps 3i tested the MM sell quotes in August, and so the MMs let the price slide anticipating 3i making an exit, but not expecting Mr. Underwood to mop them up, hence the rise.

No idea I'm afraid, the only Mr M R Underwood to show up on Google was winner of a show riding competition in 2002.

..possibly from or near Blackheath, London.

? Vianet is now carrying out the changes announced at
the end of last year. In particular, it has successfully
started working with Alcatel on support and logistics,
and is making efforts to upgrade the sales and
marketing function.
? Vianet now has eleven active trials including its
largest, with Selecta, which is now to be
complemented by a further trial using the vOpen
software for a different function within the
organisation.
? Vianet has proven that its service is equally viable for
companies wishing to use vending data for category
management (which products sell best in which
locations and at what times) and for operational
purposes (restocking, logistics etc). There is no extra
cost to Vianet in providing the services, which use the
same hardware and software.
? However, customers have been slow to sign up to
substantial rollouts, and we have therefore had to cut
our estimates of units installed. This is likely to push
profitability further out by a year.

It's possibly not new news, though it makes interesting reading, and the Athens Olympics part doesn't sound too old.

Incidentally, I see Hardman & Co published some research on VIA 21/06/04 but they won't deal with private investors and, instead, recommend getting your broker to ask them for it.

I don't think this is news. I've been regularly checking the Vianet website for almost a year now in the vain hope of finding news, and these three articles are depressingly familiar to me. They tend to post new articles at the top of the page when they do (once in a blue moon).

vOpen Unveiled Across Europe
Vianet's vOpen system is currently being evaluated across Europe with vending applications as diverse as cold drinks for the Athens Olympics, newspaper vending for London commuters and the provision of snacks on trans-European trains.

PanEuropean
Vianet is currently active in major vending projects in Greece, Belgium, Germany, France and Switzerland in addition to those ongoing in the UK. By investing in Internet protocols and mobile phone technology the Vianet service has been demonstrated to be scaleable, flexible and truly international. This offers major brands and operators an international solution for their vending data management requirements.

HHT Application Demonstrated
Vianet has developed a hand held terminal application using the XDA platform and GPRS technology. This enables kerb side polling, IRDA data capture, docket replacement and pick list generation all using real time data and online back office updates.

Good to see it bounce more than half way back up, which is always a possitive signal. Still no idea why it dropped, but the bounce is obviously being driven by volume.
