I quite like SEY and MTA and hold both penny shares that could double good luck.

The drilling of the Acorn well should be finished any day, hope that this is not an oak tree from an acorn, in fact I hope it's a dry well !!
Todays test, would I have been better off buying AMER or XTR ?
One share is the best performing oil share today and the other is the worst, no prizes but if u don't know the prices have a guess.

ok but since there's no space and I don't have time to create another row at present I'll have to take one out, I know, I'll ditch CNA! ;-)
(I've got no time to make any further changes at present)

Good idea CWA to continue the thread with general oilers, bounty could you please add FPM to the graphs.
With two wells to be drilled West of Shetland in the next couple of months I think they are worth watching as they could strike lucky.

David - I'm glad you made some money (it's a personal decision when to sell) - but watch out CNA's long term chart doesn't look great....

ps FTO interims due tomorrow could be interesting given today's price action...
(although this has always been a highly volatile share, up and down)

just thought of a replacement for SBE as it's of interest to me, especially after today's rise ...FTO I'll put the charts in the right order when I have more time.

As the charts in the header reflect past selections and shares of interest from regular posters here and VPC is now all but taken out by CNA, posts on any of these shares are now welcome here. If there's a mid-cap oil/gas share of interest I'll substitute for SBE but only one space is currently available. Click on a chart for a quote window which includes news and threads.

I think one thing even with the good shares like the soon deceased VPC, buy and hold isn't an option at the moment. I think the answer is a portfolio of well researched shares and trade from that portfolio, taking profits as they arise. I've been holding a core with IAE and a trading position, working quite well at the moment, if it reverses all of a sudden and locks me out of the market will make money from the core, so won't be disappointed.

I plot the Dow using a twin 200 DMA a bit of a blunt instrument as it's a bit late but picks the trends

I agree oilman.

I think some of the oilers must be overvalued, since if they were bargains there'd be takeovers being announced all over the shop. Perhaps the $70+ oil may be overpriced too.

This market is not following any of the rules... in fact we may even be in a new era with new rules; Rule #1 = there are no rules!

I know I am seriously re-evaluating my "buy and hold for a very long time" approach. These days, I am using the "in, out & shake that wad of cash all about" approach instead! Cash seems less risky than even clearly identifiable multi-baggers in this twitchy climate. I don't even think the recovery is underway... I doubt it's getting better. I think it's getting worse and will get much worse. We DEFINITELY aren't in Kansas any more Toto!

Being in anything longer than a few weeks seems like a bad idea in 2009 whereas it worked like a dream from 1987-2008.

Something's changed. The mortgage crisis in the usa seems to be very bad but this time it's not the SubPrime... the other mortgage types seems to be floundering.

At the end of the day we all want to make a bit of money, and it's always the institutions that decide so the PI's don't make that much difference to the end story. It's made us all look for new opportunities so it maybe thankyou to CNA after all, one worrying thing is that oil fields are being snapped up all over the world but no one apart from CNA was interested in VPC at a bargain price, makes me wonder about the current valuations of companies such at PMO.

I must admit I sold late last week when the prospects looked like Venture *was* going to the Cen-tricksters... and put some of the money into CNA shares!

Sorry guys.

Better to have cash now in this volatile market and get it working straight away rather than wait around for a cheque from Centrica.

Them crafty and evil beggars have made me some money already... but I don't half feel guilty!

"I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy"... so after this embarrassing revelation, it's back to the cold shower and the sandpaper for me then...

Bounty if u post in the header that the thread is interested in whatever oil shares u want the thread to discuss, if the regular posters ignore all the non relevant posts after a time I think we could have a decent thread, there is a lot of knowledgeable and like minded posters here, of course if the oil price tanks the threads will be a bit thin, but that could be a good warning in itself.

Hi CWA, at some point I think I'll move the non VPC specific sections of this thread to a new oil shares thread or to the IAE thread. I'm particularly interested in comparisons between mid-cap oil companies. Difficult to control the posts though which can be counter-productive although I know what you mean.

BH, it would be great if this thread was kept for any interesting news on specific oilers, write ups, or heads up on any that look undervalued with some kind of rationale given rather than meaningless one liners.
