os, the city needs churn to make their money, so they'll always either say buy or sell. They don't make much if they say buy and hold for yonks - they want you, and their own traders/fund managers, trading! tHE FUND MANAGER MAKES HIS MILL BONUS BY SIMPLY FOLLOWING HIS ANALYST RECS .. .can't get sacked for that. a £200m buy generates probably £3.5m direct commission out of the fund (plus lots of other fees and charges), as does the £200m sell some months later. rinse and repeat for several/tens of companies 4 or 5 times a year eah. Pension holders none the wiser and city bonuses all around.

What a load of contradictory twaddle, talk about cover all the bases!

Societe Generale cut its rating for United Utilities from 'buy' to 'hold' despite an expectation of reassuring first half results due out on 25 November.

It said the recent strong share price performance (+14% relative to FTSE 100 since August) had driven the share price marginally above its 940p fair value and "the strong share price performance has been at odds with the recent rise in real bond yields (given 0.6x historical beta to gilt yield movements)".

However the investment bank noted that United Utilities remained its preferred UK water holding and that it still prefers UK water over UK energy in the utilities market.

A funny old 2 year graph, this is the 5th time UU. have risen to break through a £ barrier. 3 out of the previous 4 it has bounced along just under for a month or so after the rise, the other was a swift rise through with a swift drop. Will we still be banging our heads around £10 come Christmas???

Tickling the tenner mark today and a move beyond the ATH is not that implausible in the next few weeks.
I guess that is not all that surprising , given the previously discussed factors here .

I could easily have kept my holding but don't have trading stock AND a main holding. You obviously have a big wad ;-).

Unusually for me I seemed to "pick the bottom" at £8.33 on 1/9/2015 so couldn't resist the trade but agree that the divi makes it a great alternative to a cash ISA.

Never bad to take profit , esp if you get out on a 4 month high. I sold my trading stock a bit early 2 weeks ago , but happy to sit on my main holding. United Bank.

Think we can get a little closer to £10 before rolling over. RSI is not off the scale yet and the share price was getting close to £10.50 at the end of Jan.
Would like to topslice and buy some back on any retrace.

I am tempted to top slice. It looks like they got away with the contamination reasonably lightly, which is helpful. The sector has been bumped uo, and valuations are possibly a bit stretched now. Buy back on the dips.
Ditched my Pnn trading stock way too early.

Yes , looks like the market has suddenly woken up again , I sold my trading stake too soon here. But happy as I hold a lot more!

Thanks. I hold Boeing. Usually find it hard to sit on my hands but not at the moment. Hold VOD.

I think VOD yielding 5.3% and BAE are better value today. But going to sit on some cash for the moment as looks like more turbulence ahead.

The share price tickled my sell limit for a trading stake ; decided to look for a small profit to take the cash elsewhere . There seem bigger bargains in other blue chips at the moment.

I am holding. Regulatory review out of the way, so clarity ahead.
The reason I wasn't tempted to add on the dip was the uncertainty surrounding the crypto bug. They will have to compensate users, and depending on findings, they could face a fine. The cost of additional work to get rid of the pest will come out soon. When all of that is on the table, then may be a better time to add, if disposed to do so.

"we think the low RCV premium could fuel conjecture of an infrastructure fund bid approach, particularly as UU possesses the strongest balance sheet of the three listed UK water companies," SocGen said"

Can't get much vaguer than that! I won't be holding my breath , but I will be holding UU.

Had to laugh at the Telegraph headline ; " Shares in United Utilities jumped 2.6pc "

That is definitely not a "jump" ; barely a step , obviously short of headlines.
