Terry Smith is an incredible investor but may be underestimating the change
underway in customer food preference re some of Unilever brands.

Sales of mayo fell by a high teens % in the US market last year.
That is why Unilever is attempting to reposition the brand, it's not
woke, more cold hard business strategy.

We have seen what happened to KHC, which arguably just stood still for too long.

More concerning aspect of the GSK CH bid is what does it say about prospects
for their current portfolio if they were willing to make this move..

One of Unilever's most powerful shareholders has broken ranks to deliver a stark warning to the Marmite owner's boss that his job is hanging by a thread.

Bert Flossbach – owner of investment group Flossbach von Storch which holds Unilever stock worth £1.25billion – urged chief executive Alan Jope to stick to improving performance rather than chasing costly deals.

The other day someone mentioned the ABN Amro situation a few years back. Here on ADVFN, all the Barclays holders were praying RBS would get it and all the RBS holders were praying Barclays would get it. Ordinary small shareholders, with no special insight or inside knowledge, could recognize a bad deal when they saw it - but the boards of the companies carried on pedal to the metal.

City comment: Unilever CEO Alan Jope is walking a tightrope after GSK tilt

Walking the plank would be more appropriate!

Pejaten, think acsatix meant brands not marketers? The company could start by eliminating the VP work level, would take out a layer of mediocre management and get the talent that remains focussing on operating the business. A big problem is that higher levels of management confuse reviewing with leadership. The Fundsmith post-mortem is very accurate I think.

Looking around the supermarket Unilever are passing on the costs - some products are up 10-20%; Ben & Jerrys as an example; margins should be maintained

Your comment re most marketing people being in foods is plain wrong. Worked for Unilever in Asia until recently and it is almost entirely a HPC business.
