12.5 K buy trades

Someone has a large buy order - it is being done (slowly/automatically) by a computer to avoid driving the price up.

It is normal for funds etc to either buy or sell large holdings by computer trading in small packets to avoid alerting the markets to their intentions, sometimes the trades are exactly the same size other times very small variations to put market watchers off the scent.

How exposed is TBI to the competition problems being faced by the low cost carriers, and the rising fuel prices? What proportion of, say, a 7 year contract value is fixed and what proportion is linked to traffic volume?

An old IC article (27 Feb 2004) but didn't see it posted on this thread so thought I'd slap it on here.

TBI

Another perennial bid target is airport operator TBI. Because of its increasingly successful focus on low-cost carriers, such as Luton-based easyJet, TBI is perceived by European construction groups as a way of breaking into the airport industry.

There's certainly been no shortage of potential bidders of late. About two years ago, TBI was on the receiving end of a hostile bid from French road-toll company Vinci. And just last month, the airport arm of German construction giant Hochtief walked away from making a bid after admitting that it had been circling the company. Had Hochtief tabled an offer, sector analysts think that the move would have triggered a bidding war with Vinci (which has a 14.9 per cent stake in TBI) that could have pushed the take-out price to over 90p a share. The shares now trade at just 62p, after having reached 72p during the height of Hochtief-induced bid fever.

While the immediate prospects of a takeover have diminished following Hochtief's departure, the rationale for doing a deal remains. So for those who don't mind waiting, TBI could prove to be a lucrative investment.

Hey Guys,

Just thought id tell you about DART GROUP. - The smart investors' favourite budget airline -

A host of shrewd investors are backing budget airline and distribution business Dart Group with one top smaller companies team buying at the start of this month.

Dart (DTG), which operates fledgling budget airline jet2.com and also offers air distribution services using the same planes, has become a tempting destination after a slump in its share price in the second half of last year.

Heres a few reasons why its a good time to buy now...

* Results in 7 weeks (16th June)
* ISA Stock
* The first half of the year Dart's pre-tax profits rose by 31% to £7.1 million from a 16% rise in turnover
* Company is very cheap with a P/E of only just over 7 and a forward P/E of just over 6
* Offers a healthy 4.7% dividend yield
* Market Cap. 45.70 m
* Shares In Issue 34.49 m
* 3.7% spread
* Directors and Institutions hold 61% of the shares, very few in public hands.
* Loads of cash in Bank
* Jet2 operates from Leeds/Bradford and Belfast with flights to 13 destinations once a Belfast-Prague service is launched at the end of this month.
* 16% (net book value) of the total tangible assets is in freehold property with less than 1% in short term leaseholds
* Airline booking increasing this year, a Very good recovery play considering the stock is on the bottom of its range...

When Dart's fleet of aircraft is not being used to transport holidaymakers they are utilised for distribution services, ferrying cargo, fresh produce and flowers. The company is also involved in freight forwarding at Manchester, Newcastle, east Midlands and London Heathrow.

Cheers

Low-cost travel demand lifts TBI Apr 7 2004

The Western Mail

PASSENGER numbers at TBI-owned Cardiff International Airport are closing in on the annual two million mark, figures showed yesterday.

TBI, which operates Luton, Belfast International, Cardiff and Stockholm-Skavsta airports, said a strong performance at its four operations meant trading in the second half of its financial year had been in line with expectations.

And its Welsh chief executive Keith Brooks again quashed market speculation linking TBI to a management buyout.

Mr Brooks said, "I can categorically say that there is no truth in these MBO rumours. None of TBI's management team is contemplating such an initiative."

TBI has been the subject of periodic bid speculation following an approach from French construction group Vinci two years ago and interest from German engineering group Hochtief.

Yesterday's figures showed that TBI's strongest growth in low-cost travel came at Cardiff - where the arrival of BMIbaby services helped lift passenger numbers by 28% on a year earlier - and at Skavsta with growth of 215% following the arrival of Ryanair.

Cardiff, for the year to March 31, dealt with 1.94 million passengers, compared with 1.51 million in the previous year.

Passengers using low cost carrier BMIbaby at Cardiff increased by 197% up to 758,000. However, its full service passenger level dropped 20.35% to 201,000.

At Luton, TBI said passenger numbers in the three months to March 31 were up 5% to 1.25 million, helped by EasyJet's decision to use the airport as the first destination for its new Schonefield base in Berlin.

The airline has also expanded its activities out of Belfast International with the launch of four new services to destinations in France and Spain.

The airport carried 11% more "low-cost" passengers at 772,500.

The total number of passengers to fly from TBI's four European airports stood at almost three million in the three months to the end of March. This figure included 2.45 million people who flew on low-cost flights.

With TBI now focused on the low-cost sector, there was a decline of 19% in the number of full-service trips, including a drop of 1.5% to 140,200 passengers at Luton. Charter traffic at the four airports increased by 13%

(Updating to add more detail from TBI statement)
LONDON (AFX) - TBI PLC, the airport operator, said it traded "in line with
expectations" in its second half to end-March as low-cost travel to domestic and
European destinations continued to grow.
The group's four European airports -- London Luton Airport, Belfast
International, Cardiff International and Stockholm-Skavsta -- handled a total of
2.98 mln passengers during the Jan 1 to March 31 2004 period (TBI's fourth
quarter), an increase of 13.2 pct over the same period last year.
For the six months to March, passenger numbers rose 15 pct to 6.1 mln.
Low-cost traffic continued to drive growth across the portfolio, increasing
by 17 pct to 2.5 mln passengers, while full service fell 19 pct and charter
increased 13 pct.
The growth in low-cost was principally driven out of Cardiff and Skavsta,
which increased passenger numbers by 28 pct and 215 pct respectively as a result
of the growth in operations by bmibaby(Cardiff) and Ryanair Holdings PLC
(Skavsta).
During the second half TBI continued to attract additional low-cost traffic.
In November 2003 Luton became the first destination to be served out of
easyJet PLC's new Schonefeld base in Berlin, followed in February 2004 by the
announcement of a new route to Budapest International in Hungary.
Also, WIZZ Air will start a new route to Katowice in Poland in May and
easyJet will begin services to Dortmund in September, both of which will be
served out of Luton.
In March, easyJet announced the further expansion of its operations out of
Belfast with the launch of new direct scheduled services to key destinations in
France and Spain, plus an additional daily London Gatwick service, bringing the
total destinations served by easyJet from Belfast to 13.
This came on top of the announcement by Jet2 of two new services to Prague
and Brussels.
At Skavsta, work on the new terminal building has been completed with full
commercial operation scheduled to begin later this month. In January Ryanair
added two new daily routes to Rome and Milan.
Outside Europe, Orlando Sanford continues to see a recovery in domestic
traffic which will be further boosted this month when Vacation Express returns
its Caribbean hub operations to this airport. Under a seven-year agreement,
flights will operate three days a week to 11 Caribbean destinations.
TBI will announce its year to March 31 2004 results on June 10.
Prior to today's statement analysts were forecasting a pretax profit before
amortisation of goodwill and exceptional items of 22.3-25.0 mln stg versus 23.3
mln stg last time and EPS on the same basis of 2.5-3.0 pence versus 2.86 pence.
Shares in TBI closed Monday at 67 pence, valuing the group at 374 mln stg.

TBI plc

("TBI" or "the Group")

Pre-Close Trading Update and Quarterly Traffic Statistics

The Board of TBI confirms that trading for the second half of the year has been
in line with expectations as low-cost travel to domestic and European
destinations continues to grow.

During the six months to 31 March 2004, the Group has continued to attract
additional low-cost traffic. In November 2003 London Luton Airport ("Luton")
became the first destination to be served out of easyJet's new Schonefeld base
in Berlin, followed in February 2004 by the announcement of a new route to
Budapest International. In addition, the Group awarded the mandate to manage
its car park operations at Luton, together with the bus shuttle service between
Luton Airport Parkway railway station and the terminal at Luton, to NCP. The
five year contract commenced 1 April 2004.

Looking ahead, WIZZ Air will commence a new route to Katowice in Poland in May
and easyJet will begin services to Dortmund in September, both of which will be
served out of Luton.

Elsewhere, Belfast, Cardiff and Skavsta have all continued to benefit from
growth in low-cost activity. In March, easyJet announced the further expansion
of its operations out of Belfast International (BIA) with the launch of new
direct scheduled services to four key European destinations in France and Spain,
plus an additional daily London Gatwick service, bringing the total destinations
served by easyJet from BIA to 13. This comes on top of the announcement by Jet2
of two new services to be commenced to Prague and Brussels. BIA continues to
work closely with both Air Route Development (NI) Ltd and easyJet and we look
forward to announcing further major developments in the near future.

At Skavsta, work on the new terminal building has been completed with full
commercial operation scheduled to begin later this month. Traffic continues to
grow rapidly at Skavsta underpinned by Ryanair's base operation at this
location, which was bolstered in January with the addition of two new daily
routes to Rome and Milan. Cardiff continues to benefit from the success of
bmibaby.

Outside Europe, Orlando Sanford continues to see a recovery in domestic traffic
which will be further boosted this month when Vacation Express returns its
Caribbean hub operations to this airport. Under the seven year agreement,
flights will operate three days a week to 11 Caribbean destinations.

TBI's Preliminary Results for the year ended 31 March 2004 will be announced on
10 June 2004.

easyJet announces three new routes from
Belfast International Airport

TBI plc today warmly welcomed the largest single phase of expansion from Belfast
International Airport so far by easyJet, with the launch of new direct scheduled
services to four key European destinations in France and Spain, plus an
additional daily London Gatwick service.

From 25 June 2004 easyJet will fly nonstop from Belfast International Airport to
Paris (Charles De Gaulle) and Nice, as well as to Malaga and Alicante in the
popular Spanish property regions on the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca.

This brings the total number of easyJet destinations served from Belfast
International Airport to 13.

Keith Brooks, Chief Executive of TBI plc said:

"These four new direct services are a welcome addition to our existing European
scheduled services from Belfast International Airport, which include Amsterdam,
and most recently Prague and Brussels.

We have worked closely with both Air Route Development (NI) Ltd and easyJet, to
make these developments a reality. We plan to continue our co-operation with ARD
(NI) in the forthcoming months in order to create direct access to other key
markets in Europe and North America for the Northern Ireland air traveller. To
this end our ongoing investment in facilities will continue apace, in order to
ensure that the local community reap the true benefit of Belfast International's
position as an unconstrained, 24/7 airport.

We look forward to announcing further major developments in the near future."

The key difference between REITs and conventional property companies is that REITs pay out all their profits in the form of dividends – hence pay no corporation tax. They are also expected to be exempt from capital gains tax. However, Lawrie says the Chancellor might adopt the French practice of levying tax on conversion, should listed property companies wish to convert. “In France a one-off 16.5% tax charge on notional capital gains is spread over four years,” he says.

UK property firm Hammerson has already announced plans for a secondary listing of its shares on the Euronext Premier Marché as a prelude to putting its French property portfolio into a SIIC, the French equivalent of a REIT.
