New tax rates will apply to all new cars which produce as little as 1g/km of CO2 or more.

‘New’ first-year payments will be introduced across the 13 bands. - those emitting more CO2 will pay more tax in the first year.

After that first year, the annual rate of tax, no matter what the car’s CO2 emission is, becomes a flat rate of £140. Under the new law, the more polluting the new car, the more the driver will have to pay in the first year

UK is one of five countries persistently contravening legal nitrogen dioxide levels with pollution from factories and vehicles Britain has been sent a final warning to comply with EU air pollution limits for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) or face a case at the European court of justice.

If the UK does not show Brussels how it intends to comply with EU law within two months, a court hearing with the power to impose heavy fines could begin later this year, as the Guardian revealed last week.

Slightly O/T, but if each wood burning stove adds the equivalent amount of fine soot particles as 2,000 petrol cars, they seem to be a big step backwards in built up areas. My neighbour burns what I assume is coke in hers and that stinks sometimes when weather conditions bring the smoke down.

"Wood was one of the fuels prohibited in the Clean Air Act from being burned in smokeless zones. But there is an exemption which allows it to be burned in appliances approved by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

There are now hundreds of appliances on the list, ranging from wood-burning stoves to biomass boilers. Theoretically, all meet standards.

But as with diesel engines, the level of pollution measured in a controlled test does not necessarily reflect what spews out of them in practice — when, for example, people open the doors of their wood-burner to create a homely, open-fire effect.

A study in Tasmania, where new wood-burning stoves are allowed only if they are designed to emit less than 2.5g of PM2.5s per kg of wood burned, found that in real life they emit nearly four times that — with an average of 9.4g per kg. At that level, a single wood stove burning three tonnes of wood a year — the average — will emit as much PM2.5 pollution as 2,000 petrol cars."

And why does it follow the governments power strategy is in chaos? It may be, it may not be, but it is not down to the challenge of EVs , not yet anyway.

The move to EVs would or will reduce diesel and petrol consumption in the capital. This will need a large investment in relevant electricity deployment.Yes, of course! Why use rhetoric like "huge strain"?Just work backwards from requirement to action.

They are seen as an antidote to the wave of pollution clouding Britain’s biggest cities. Within the next few years, it is hoped that a fleet of electric cars will clear the air by driving diesel and petrol engines off urban streets.

However, analysis has found that the burgeoning fleet of plug-in vehicles may create a new headache of its own.

Switching all cars to ultra-low emissions may place a massive strain on the power network because of the additional resources needed to recharge batteries, research suggests.

Figures produced by Transport for London (TfL) suggest that switching to an all-electric vehicle fleet in the capital would demand five times the amount of power needed to run the entire London Underground network. Rebecca Long-Bailey, the shadow business secretary, said the Government's energy policy was in "chaos".

Why doesn't somebody in TRK have the wit to buy a few of these Japanese cars, replace said 'shot' gearboxes with IVT and then sell them back to Japanese car buyers and let them create the demand for TRK IVT in new auto cars?

Too much like hard work?

Much easier to just license everything out and let some other mug do all the work.

A few days ago by chance I found myself talking to a New Zealander who was in business importing cars from Japan to NZ. They buy cars with auto boxes which are preferred in NZ, and up to 6 years old with no more than 60,000kms on them. Turns out that almost 80% of these cars have been used in stop-start city driving and the gearboxes are shot and have to be replaced! Thus he found himself with another business rebuilding and replacing Jap autoboxes. It's common knowledge in the NZ car trade that a low mileage car from Japan will need the autobox swapping out. So what the heck is going on? A car industry where the products seldom get out of second gear is producing products where the gearbox is shot at about 30,000 miles! How come Univance have not promoted the ivt to their home industry?
