Eskom, the electrical utility provider in South Africa, predicted in its annual
report that electricity prices would increase by 18% in 2008 and 17% in 2009.
If approved, the first increase will take effect from April 1, 2008. PSGM's
business plan has provided for an increase in electricity of 6% in line with
the cost of inflation. Should the 18% tariff hike be implemented unit costs
can be expected to increase by an additional $6 per oz.

Not sure GS. PSGM is horribly run down, the lack of capital spend now resulting in spiraling costs. It needs a substantial campaign of sustained development to open up new gold stopes. Only then will costs come back under control. Without the Pamodzi deal or some commitment from MC/Casten to further loans or equity, the mine is effectively dead.

Metals - Gold, platinum hit records as dollar weakens, jitters linger UPDATE

(updates prices, adds details, adds platinum high)
LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Gold surged to a record above 920 usd per ounce
as the dollar weakened overnight, oil prices rose, financial jitters lingered
and as mine stoppages in key producer South Africa sparked supply concerns.
Higher stock markets in Asia and London after Wall Street made gains
yesterday also boosted sentiment, even though in the longer term major worries
over the global economy remain.
Bullion trades in the opposite direction to the US dollar as it is seen as
an alternative asset and in line with oil prices because gold acts as an
inflation hedge.

Johannesburg - South Africa's gold mines, and mining companies in other sectors, were instructed last night by electricity utility Eskom to shut their mines, possibly for up to between two and six weeks.

A letter signed by Eskom CEO Jacob Maroga said that key industrial consumers (KPI) had to reduce their power loads to "minimum levels". He added that Eskom could not guarantee power supply.

"We did not send down a shift last night and we did not send one this morning at any of our mines," said Willie Jacobsz, spokesperson for Gold Fields. "I understand the situation is the same at AngloGold Ashanti and Harmony Gold," he said.

A Johannesburg analyst said, however, that smaller consumers such as Simmer & Jack Mines and DRDGold still had power, at least at present.

In the letter, Maroga said the mines were required to "evacuate all underground staff"; "suspend all surface and underground mining"; but were allowed to keep essential services operating such as pumping and lighting. Mining companies would also be allowed underground if proto-teams were required to tackle fires.

Looks like Pamodzi are getting PSGM on the cheap. Zarusgold nearly 6500 now. I take it we (TMG) are still in control of PSGM and it's financies at present. So if (BIG IF) they cash positive then this benifit should be seen by TMG shareholders.

the funds for the acquisition may be irrelevant as the deal is structured so that tmg could end up with diluted paper to cover their hard cash obligation to
contolling holders... or the deal is again postponed, renegotiated or folds
to collect an enhanced 'break' fee.

GS, of course they say it's a great deal, they need to persuade investors to cough up the funds for the acquisition. They might well mean it, but it's not their opinion that matters, it's their potential investors. My concern is that in the current financial climate we can't find new investors in PSGM. We haven't been inundated with offers in the last few years and heaven knows what state the mine is in now.
