14/10/2016 17:04 | Fangorn2 14 Oct '16 - 14:43 - 18245 of 18251 0 0 @Alphorn, @Careful Yes - I beleive in a nation state's right to "self determination" That's why I was pro Scotland having a Ref first time around. They're entitled. Given they were resoundingly Pro Remain I'm happy for them ot have a second(and final) referendum as circumstances have materially changed for them. But I want to knock this "neverendum" on the head otherwise we'll go nowhere as everything will constantly get challenged. I look on the Scottish situation as Ms Sturgeon acting like a headmistress. "that's not the answer you were supposed to give, You'll go back and do it again and again until you get it right." It seems she wants independence from London (where a large proportion of the MPs are Scottish) but is happy to be ruled by an unelected bunch of bureaucrats from Brussels. | vaneric1
14/10/2016 15:28 | Exactly and as a shareholder it's been a complete success as per the price movements. | ladeside
14/10/2016 14:42 | Exactly Mealiff...and the fact that the current Tesoc CEO until recently was on the Board of Unilever has nothing to do with any of this?Either cooked up together or handbags at dawn in the carpark.Either way it aint real. Do us all a favour[ other than Mealiff].. This is a media scam trading on the essential and indisputable stupidity of the British. | mr.elbee
14/10/2016 14:39 | I hope this Tesco/Unilever thing was not a planned stunt. Dave Lewis is a former Unilever executive. | careful
14/10/2016 14:04 | Tesco have won the battle and put those unilever upstarts firmly in their place as predicted.......... | ladeside
14/10/2016 14:03 | Works out in Tesco's favour Free Publicity & PR for the company and giving the illusion of putting UK goods and THEIR CUSTOMERS first . no matter what people's perceptions you can't buy good publicity | mealiff
14/10/2016 13:59 | Lidl's huge new depot near Exeter is taking shape - PHOTOS | johnwise
14/10/2016 13:43 | @Alphorn, Rhodesia is a special case.In fact it's a perfect example for BCG of the reasons most of Africa has fallen so far behind the rest of the world once securing their independence. I've seen it first hand, in several African nations up front and person over the years as well. @Careful Yes - I beleive in a nation state's right to "self determination" That's why I was pro Scotland having a Ref first time around. They're entitled. Given they were resoundingly Pro Remain I'm happy for them ot have a second(and final) referendum as circumstances have materially changed for them. But I want to knock this "neverendum" on the head otherwise we'll go nowhere as everything will constantly get challenged. In fact I'd go so far as to say all the home nations should get a vote this time. .Sometimes a bit of manic depression and fear is a good thing. Patriotic optimism achieves nothing and has a long history of disaster. A mixture of both surely the best. As to Patriotic Optimism achieves nothing, suspect those who fought in WW2 particularly would disagree. It's essentially what kept us going when we hit our bleakest hour. Just because the Germans, Italians, Spanish,Japanese have shown patriotic optimism achieves nothing but bloodshed there's no need to tar Britain. Tesco heaving here to - as was our local Iceland. The rush for the "Free Marmite itht he Daily Mail" being he main reason!!!! The shelves were bare. Our local hardly ever sells any but yesterday 18 went. I bought 6 500g glass jars myself. I don't get the attraction to Aldi/Lidl - too haphazard a layout, you cant do a full shop there, the produce available is on rotation, often not there when you want it,and the "brands, never heard of many of them. | fangorn2
14/10/2016 12:39 | ..and talking of optimism. Tesco was heaving today, i have a feeling things have really turned around. The nearby Aldi was quieter today. I suspect that people will try it, but most will return. | careful
14/10/2016 12:35 | I presume that you agree with our friend Nicola North of the border. 'freedom, liberty, self government are priceless' she says, just like you. 65% of her exports are to mainland UK. she will need a trade agreement with us. Sometimes a bit of manic depression and fear is a good thing. Patriotic optimism achieves nothing and has a long history of disaster. | careful
14/10/2016 12:06 | "freedom & liberty is priceless". Had exactly the same conversation many many years ago when I lived far south. Rhodesia became independant of the nasty arch rulers (UK)...........the rest is history. Lesson No1 - there is always someone above you in life or business. | alphorn
14/10/2016 11:51 | @Careful, Short term pain for long term gain - freedom & liberty is priceless. Sterling move is too be expected - it's why nations have a floating currency. Pensions are under severe strain with current interest rates as low as they are,and expected to be for longer. What makes you think you'll even "get a pension" by the time you retire. State one certainly wont exist in 20-30years. So defeatist, so pessimistic. There'll be tough times, but there'll be positives as well. We have an incredible opportunity to grasp. A negative outcome will be self fulfilling if everyone falls for the manic depression you are trying to push...Can you imagine similar on the Normandy beaches, or those that bravely fought in the Skies in Battle of Britain. "We did not vote for that" they will say.. Oh no we won't, stop misrepresenting. | fangorn2
14/10/2016 11:43 | tesco will not be alone in paying higher prices. How will these Brexit types feel when fuel and food go up, pensions get smaller, taxes go up, unemployment rises.. 'we did not vote for that' they will say. | careful
14/10/2016 11:34 | thing is Tesco is smaller than Unilever so they have only pushed it out till the new year just watch . | pal44
14/10/2016 11:21 | Marmite contents: Open the label on the lid | gyy
14/10/2016 08:43 | The supply situation with Tesco involving the price of Marmite and other products has been successfully resolved, Unilever said. A Tesco spokesman said: "We always put our customers first and we're pleased this situation has been resolved to our satisfaction." Steven Dresser, retail analyst at Grocery Insight, said there was likely to be a round of price hikes in January as retailers look to pass on higher costs once the festive season is out the way. "No one wants to put prices up ahead of Christmas. Others may just wait until January." "It's only going to get more painful," he cautioned. (It seems to me what is being said is that Uniliver agrees not to put up their prices until after Christmas, then they´ll go up by 10%.) | loganair
14/10/2016 08:34 | Like that was a hard one to call! | joe say
14/10/2016 08:15 | vaneric1 13 Oct '16 - 10:48 - 18201 of 18234 0 0 Edit I don't think there will be any "winner" these two giants will see sense, get their heads together and settle quickly for their mutual benefit. Told you so! | vaneric1
13/10/2016 19:52 | Do people realy eat Marmite or just buy it because it represents "British-ness" ? I'm convinced that the label survives due to some mistaken idea that it was better in the good old days and lauded by expats who hag on to their identity by clinging on something "English" Mmmm,I wonder what the contents include... Anyway seriously an agreemment has been reached (surprise, surprise) so the posturing can stop and both bisinesses can continue to get down to screwing the consumer | pvee
13/10/2016 19:39 | Today 2-35pm in Tesco....like a ghost town. 2-50 in Aldi...isles jam packed could'nt move. | latics2
13/10/2016 19:35 | No matter who wins joe public will have cough up.. brand loyalty is strong in U.K. .. you go to lo costs shops never know what you getting .. puffin hearts say ... | pal44

13/10/2016 17:46 | loganair, How many prices are you checking? Or do you just have a thing against ULVR? Supermarkets getting together = cartel. Oh dear. | hillbrown |
