Apologies to sds shareholders as this is slightly off-topic.
Goldeneye - a glance at CDG's share price says that it is obvious that your "mark my words" isn't being heeded by the market in general! I have been watching mineral (as well as O & G) exploration activity in Ireland for over 30 years. There have been several gold plays that have petered out. Environmental concerns will, in my view, ensure that mining and the associated dirty extraction process won't happen here. The extrememly low concentrations at which AU occurs in rock (I mean relative to the concentrations for metals such as Pb, Zn and Cu) mean that huge amounts of ore have to be processed to extract relatively tiny amounts of gold. The consequential impact on the terrain and the environmental risks are clear. Any mining major will be well aware of this and will have had an eye on the massive local difficulties that Shell are facing in attempting to bring gas ashore in Co. Mayo.

Neither CDG nor Conroy himself are taken seriously here in Ireland. A difficult man to deal with - the Galmoy lead-zinc mine could only be developed when it was finally taken out of his hands.

The lessons for SDS and for us, its shareholders, in relation to the Bantry licence - barite is possible and perhaps silver too. But write the gold totally out of the equation.

Benchmark, you are wrong about ANY part of Ireland as CDG will will see gold mined in monaghan within a few years, mark my words. If not CDG, then a major that buys them out.

Not sure what to make of SDS, i will keep them on my watch list.
Thought either SDS or KDR might have done something in finland, but looks like this has faded away.

All the info will supply is in the public domain. A general pdf brochure about UK Barite deposits and uses.

The first very important aspect, is are there any aluminium, zinc or lead linked with or adjacent to the Barite, that may be disturbed during mining operations.
If there is, environmental issues () may make it uneconomic to extract the Barite or stop permission for mining being granted. Although the SDS deposit has already been mined which should remove any local concerns.
The Foss mine near Aberfeldy, Scotland has had to put a lot of effort into stopping these metals getting into the water supply.

Sunrise prospects for barite in Ireland

Mining company Sunrise Diamonds Plc (AIM: SDS) has been granted a prospecting licence for base metals, barite, silver, gold and platinum at a former mine near Bantry in County Cork.

Macclesfield-based Sunrise, headed by executive chairman Patrick Cheetham, said it was targeting the Derryginagh barite deposit for the production of high-value white "paint-grade" barite which is used as a mineral filler in paints and plastics and is currently worth between £195 and £220 per tonne in the UK.

The Derrryginagh mine was worked in the period 1864-1922, supplying white barite to the local paint industry but the barite deposits were drilled in the 1980s by Dresser Minerals International Inc.

Sunrise, which has previously concentrated on diamond exploration in Finland, said there was significant demand for white paint-grade barite in Europe but no major mine supply outside of India and China, with the latter now restricting exports because of growing internal demand.

It plans to collect samples of the barite for testing before undertaking further drilling.

5pongebob, it looks like a report about earlier tests carried out by de Beers, so SDS didn't do the tests themselves. Anyway, the diamond grade does look interesting, no matter who did the tests.

I don't think that getting the licence is a big hurdle. I don't see why it would be refused, especially as someone else (i.e. de Beers) has held a licence for that region in the past. If they wanted an exploration licence in downtown Sydney, that would be different.

The difficult bit comes next - maybe unearthing other de Beers data, but then possibly raising funds (issuing shares I guess) for more exploratory work. They could do a bigger sample of the Cue kimberlite and they could drill other targets to look for kimberlite.

Thanks, safman, but this announcement is already available for everyone to see right here on ADVFN:

Discussion boards are on the right, RNS announcements are on the left, just under the share-price graphs.

So... it appears that SDS have discovered Australia. I'm amazed that they have any resources to commit to exploration.

Well Arf, perhaps I can shed some light... Yesterday at 11:57 I made a trading error. Using Sippdeal's new trading-platform I inadvertantly placed a 100,000 SDS BUY at 0.7p, when I had meant to place a SELL. doh! Anyway, since in cash terms it was rather small, I decided to let it run. Imagine my surprise, when suddenly other buys began to appear and actually pushed the share-price up!!!

This morning I gratefully sold 2 x 100,000 at .83p (LSE) and .821p (Plus). Every cloud has a silver lining I guess. Still a net loss of course, on the original 100K, but nevertheless a satisfactory outcome. The funds have gone straight into GCM by the way, a better risk/reward of the moment.

That is not to say that SDS news is not on the way, just that the sudden buying interest all seems a rather odd coincidence... Glad to be out, but good luck if you still hold. Enjoy...
