08/7/2015 09:49 | It was indeed the perfect appointment as this company has huge revenue and razor thin margins, therefore she and her tight knit team of penny-pinching executives were the perfect match. We are seeing the expansion in margins but still some way to go. However as you can see by looking at WH smith, once the foundations of frugality have been laid it is pretty easy to maintain and develop. If Swann and Smith were to disappear now (2 years in) it probably wouldn't make much difference to the company's path. They should be making £150-200m profit per annum at their leanest and they will be doing so if they continue on this path. | rarther

08/7/2015 08:31 | For every day of bright sunshine and flogging £1.60 water by the pallet, there are days like today & tomorrow where half of london will not even bother to go to work and therefore ssp ends up throwing all the sandwiches in the bin yet still have to pay for 35000 contracted staff. The transport unions' strategies and Network Rail's planned maintenance programs are the two biggest thorns in SSP's side and they never go too long without rearing their ugly mugs. Of course, over a year these ups and down even out. But I just thought I should bring a little bit of bearish misery to this otherwise chirpy forum. | rarther

02/6/2015 08:19 | Stephen Message of Old Mutual is taking a big punt on the board here. Below is a link to an article from December 2014 when Old Mutual had 10% of the company. He says Old Mutual's position is overweight in their portfolio because they are optimistic that Swann can squeeze the margins more. hxxp://www.moneyobse They have since increased their stake, which must be well over 5% of their portfolio as the shares have gone up around 35% since that article. That seems a very heavy position for an income fund to have, but he seems to think the downside is limited. | rarther
