there is a five page 'case study' download about this pr/news release on the SRT web-site. You have to enter yer name, email and 'phone number to get the full details, so I don't think it's right for me to post up the full article.

Here's the link for the case study:

It does use satellite and it can go out 'up to 150 nautical miles' which is 172 'proper' miles. Still not sure how they do that, but they are the experts.

Because it is not an RNS, they can say anything they want. The Nomad will not have seen it nor approved of it, as it is not intended for investors, at least not serious ones.

OTOH, any actual material news would be subject to the correct disclosures and Tucker has not yet been known to set fire to any bushels.

'SRT Marine Systems PLC is pleased to announce that it has successfully worked with local partners to deploy the SRT VMS System to monitor and manage a national fleet of fishing boats operating up to 250km from shore across an area of over 600,000 sq km much of which is open-ocean and incorporates sensitive marine environments.

The SRT VMS System is being used by authorities to continuously track and monitor all fishing boats to enhance the management, efficiency and safety of fishermen and protect against illegal, unregulated and unlicensed fishing (IUU)'

LaV, re 'hint it is progressing', the above reads to me like it's all done and dusted!

specifically:
'...to monitor and manage a national fleet of fishing boats operating ...'

and
'... is being used by authorities to continuously track and monitor all fishing boats....'

Fair enough, but if they had sold a bunch of stuff they would have announced it, and would have had to. They haven't. And Simon is rarely coy about communications.

OTOH, there has been little news of late. Simon was pretty sure that Ecuador would come through this year, so maybe it is a bit of a hint that it is progressing. Or maybe it is just puff.

if it's news of an Ecuador-wide system, then it would surely merit a RNS, even if the dosh wasn't enough, on the grounds of new territory.
Although I would be surprised if SRT were handing out national systems for a few bob?.....
Or, if not, RNSNON.

The problem with that is Galapagos are roughly 600 miles off the Ecuador coast, you would need a mainland mountain to be around 200,000 ft high to see 550 miles out....I don't believe Ecuador have such a mountain!
9Everest is a tiddler at 29,000ft!)

LaV, could be right, who knows. maybe this was a news release in a parallel universe or something....it don't feel quite right!

Just following up Yump's suggestion (post 4270) that this is for the whole of Ecuador, not just the islands. The original Galapagos post talked of "up to 180 miles" range which implies a circular area of only about 260,000km2 from a base station. The coastline of mainland Ecuador is about 900km long, so taking a 250km offshore range gives another 225,000km2. (All very approximate as the coastline is not straight!) This gets us to just under 500,000km2 within spitting distance of the 600,000 claimed in the newsclip.

So I think this could be new news of an Ecuador-wide system.

91 times 2 is?

Maybe that was the artistic licence.

what about mainland height, TP ? If also 5541ft...then you have your 180 miles (90+90)

Don't know how the lottery works, but it no doubt functions as a tax on the poor or ignorant.

The point about the difficulty of fisheries management is, however, very serious, and it is not as if simply tracking boats is anywhere near an answer. It is a start though and the sales pitch to fishermen seems to be that it will allow the authorities to stop outsiders nicking their fish.

From memory, the last photos on the site re Ecuador were from the northern-most province where I understand law and order are in shortish supply. Didn't our man there need bodyguards? There could be slightly awkward moments fitting the Identifiers.

still not quite sure how they can track 250km from shore....

using the font of all knowledge, wiki, highest point on Galapagos is 5,541ft.

This calculator

tell me at that height, I can see 91 miles to the horizon

250km is 155 miles, so unless I'm missing something?.....

perhaps it's artistic licence, I dunno, but , as far as I can see, you can't track 250km out from the Galapagos even if you stick yer base station on the very highest spot up a long pole!

Base station in Galapagos (with satellite transmission to mainland) and high up base stations mainland Ecuador should be enough?

TP

It was me that said no satellite.

To requote from the original RNS

'The Identifier transceivers were tested and evaluated over the course of a year, during which they met all requirements with a recorded system tracking range of up to 180 miles due to the height of the AIS base stations.'

Zero latency indeed, because it is direct to the base stations. Nine, I think, there are.

you say no satellite, but if they are tracking 250km from shore, isn't that satellite?
I note release says 'zero latency', which implies it ain't satellite?
Bit confused here!....

I posted a while back, maybe even as long ago as the old thread, about the sorry old tale of trying to get some sort of plan worked out for sensible fishing in the Galapagos - some document I came across which detailed about twenty years worth of messing around, perverse incentives, different institutions at cross purposes and the like. It certainly didn't sound as if fisheries management, there or elsewhere, was easy. Nor did it really sound like they were approaching some sort of solution.

BTW, I have checked and it was the Dutch Postcode Lottery which paid for it. Mugs everywhere, it seems.

LaValmy,

No satellite...on reflection that makes sense. Had not thought about that.

TP, Yes....potential customers should like this. SRT is a proven performer.

LaValmy,

It does say this is national, hence it is not just a Galapagos rehash. Also deals with catch reporting and licence management. Progress is being made. Share price deserves to go up.

maybe it's a pr release aimed more at potential customers rather than investors?.....
