DD cheaper shops always outperform competitors in harsher times. People don't stop spending they just want more bang for buck. Took another look around a SPD shop today, their prices are nearly half that of JD sports on many lines and look no different quality wise, JD's margin must be huge.. Looking back on SPD'S high profitability it was 2012 onwards at the height of the credit squeeze and wage deflation, and arguably much worse times than now. JD sports banging out t-shirts for £40 struggled in this period but prospered in the last few years as the economy improved, proving this case.

The problem is the big fellas are happy to chip away at 1% increments. Everyone is waiting for good news or at least a trading update to help with assessments. Is one due? I was thinking about selling up a few days ago in the hope of buying back in later but I think his increased presence in the US is the key here. It's all about currency issues for me as the strong dollar is affecting margin and bombed the share price The Dunlop sale in dollars will be used to buy stock, but $140m might just make up 1st quarter purchase requirments. I'm not sure how much profits will be generated in the US with the new purchase but bolstering dollar earnings is the solution because valuations are based on a heavily hit margin due to the lack of hedging. I note the US business manufactures some of it's own brands also which could be sold to Europe boosting the us operation and avoiding the need to purchase in £"s. He could even increase debt on the US operation in the hope the pound will recover longer term. There are options here.Anyway I'm holding for this reason and I'm even thinking of topping up. These might drop to 290 but sometime this year they will take off towards £4, all imo.

My view is the seller is nearly finished. The bears might argue that when SPD stop buying them that they'll go down. At this stage MA will have 56% plus SPD having 10% Odey 3.5 % plus 3 other institutions with a combined total of about 6% plus all the small holders . You gentleman do the maths but these things will have hardly any free float.

Just the last months trading with intra day highs and lows plus closing volume .This is both for the bulls and bears to discuss . Take want you want out of these numbers . Please be mindful that even after you take out SPD purchase and matching sellers there's still a hell of a lot of volume unaccounted for.

I do wonder if the proposed purchase of those US stores will help overcome currency shortfalls. If he uses the US operations profits to purchase goods and then ship them to the UK and Europe it would be far better than just converting dollars into sterling as he is effectively earning extra margin on the cash due to the dollars purchasing strength.I'm just trying to work out his long term solution because I'm sure he is working on one...

If you pound continues to recover at a slow rate this should creep up with it. The pound was pounded on brexit fears but the economy has continually defy the gloom mongers. We are one of the strongest economies in Europe and the pound is artificially undervalued. Sooner or later the pound should recover at least 10% in the next 6 months.

My guess is there will be a trickle of good news flow to come out once the seller or sellers are finished . MA will take great satisfaction in taking all those doubters out a 300p and then the RNS's will come..... just a theory .

@Nortic the opposite may also be true. Once SPD finish the buyback the share price may retreat back towards 270.

I can't decide which way it'll go, but without any good news coming out I can't see it going very far.

Well I was in another sports direct shop today and was blown away. It was a former BHS store and it was a huge megastore. Wow what a transformation and I assume this was similar to the store ignoble was talking about. Clean, light and airy, products neatly laid out and a huge array of stock from bike accessories to camping stuff as well as the conventional offerings. I think I see now what he meant when he said he wants SPD to become the Selfridges of sporting goods world.

It was a one stop shop in every sense of the word and the staff looked really cheerful. I can't believe the transformation and if this is the future format (I believe he was up for taking on many of the former BHS stores) it is a sure fire hit.
