17/1/2017 09:41 | It's too feminine a name imo, it just won't spread to the fellas. Unless of course it is targeting the female of the species, in which case it's fair enough | terminated
16/1/2017 23:22 | Lillywhites is quite a prestige brand. I try to work out why they don't focus on that being high-end and then repeat a few other lillywhite premium stores. | rimmy2000
16/1/2017 22:58 | Did ponder that point, if they use Flannels as the group's premium multibrand retail destination, I.e. Selfridges, then would punters know it's actually Sports Direct?. | discodave4
16/1/2017 22:44 | Yea DD there are risks with that strategy. But isn't he opening a new store format in John Lewis? I don't think he intends to install a sports direct, he is promoting a different brand ans most people won't even know it's part of spd. In the same way he is opening up footlockers as a way of tapping into upmarket trainers. I think in spd he probably not offer high end and lobbed together but he could go medium end rather than just stack em high sell it cheap. | terminated
16/1/2017 20:04 | Waitrose or Asda | ignoble
16/1/2017 19:06 | Fair points. The only issue is you can't target both ends of the market IMO - it's either one or the other IMO, look how it screwed up Thorntons (know it's not sports retail but they tried the same thing).High end brands won't be happy supplying both formats.DD | discodave4
16/1/2017 13:58 | Yea I've been when my girlfriends cons me to go in with her ^.^ Firstly shops can upgrade and offset costs against rising profits. Opening news store is a common way for retailers to increase profits it's not always a negative. Only if those new shops underperform will it negatively impact on balance sheet. Secondly spd have close to 300m in the bank (Inc Dunlop proceeds) earning little interest so investing it will surely give a better capital return. No-one really knows what he intends to do but he has cornered the budget end, it makes sense to start tapping into the higher end and start competing with JD sports. | terminated
16/1/2017 10:54 | DD Why would they need to spend vast amounts to move more upmarket? We are really talking about stocking higher quality items with a better margin, and reducing stock so stores don't look too crammed. And capital expenditure could effectively be offset by greater margins. it's not all negative imo. | terminated
16/1/2017 10:11 | Hi all, Nearly £ 180M worth of shares in Treasury, abt 9% of market cap. Hmm, now if MA could persuade someone to do a deal for shares, he's got a lot of firepower...! ATB | extrader
16/1/2017 08:28 | Agreed trading range should be more clearer soonish | the_equaliser
16/1/2017 07:43 | Only approx another 37,000,000 shares that SPD has authority to buy back. :-) It really is going to get very exciting. | whites123
16/1/2017 07:11 | And SPD will keep taking them whilst they are offered. However, the very second the supply dries up then the stock motors northwards. There will be but one winner, and it wont be the city spivs. MA has shown that he will not be controlled and made to become the puppet. As for journos who go to press slating him and his business acumen. Have these journos created an empire providing work for 17,000 people? Easy to slate someone from the sideline. Sports Direct announces that on 13 January 2017 it purchased 512,900 of its ordinary shares from Citigroup Global Markets Limited (acting as the Company's broker) on the London Stock Exchange at a price of 285.2 pence per share. The purchased shares will all be held as treasury shares. Following the above purchase, the Company holds 50,380,454 ordinary shares as treasury shares. The total number of ordinary shares in issue (excluding shares held as treasury shares) is 590,221,915. | whites123
14/1/2017 18:08 | I like it. MA may be arrogant, but he is determined to show who it is that runs the business. The "City Spivs" may cry and moan and even sell off, but what concern is that in reality? Odey is showing support, and one thing for certain is not truer, irrespective of the moral high ground, the city will not miss out on the chance to make money. Support will return for SPD. The sum of parts is worth far more than the current MC would suggest. And all the while the city sells off, then MA via the BB will keep on taking them. Its great, and I applaud him. Its nice to see someone with a set of balls these days. | whites123
14/1/2017 11:05 | Spot on IMO (Paul Scott, Stockopedia):"Sports Direct has become a complete shambles, with arguably an arrogant fool at the helm, who's doing a great job of destroying the company's reputation. JD has differentiated itself as being a much more upmarket setting for selling very high margin sports products, and has thereby won the hearts & minds of the best brands - who don't want their kit selling in the downmarket Sports Direct stores, nor being tainted by association with Mike Ashley.Sports Direct is trying to move upmarket, but I don't think they stand a chance, and will have to spend vast amounts to bring their stores up to a standard where the best brands would want to put their product." | discodave4
13/1/2017 15:16 | Does anyone know if/when SPD give an update of their Christmas trading? Looking at historical years, it appears that they are the only major retailer who don't routinely report. | mongrels3 |
