TechMarketView: Sophos sees Q3 profit Preliminary Q3 results from UK cyber security specialist Sophos were well received by the market with double digit billings growth, a return to quarterly operating profit and particularly strong cash generation. Looks like its cloud-based Sophos Central platform and Intercept X endpoint protection solution (which gained 3,300 clients in the quarter) was, as Sophos says, a "key driver" in its performance. A trading update calculates that Sophos’ GAAP revenue grew 11% to US$135m yoy (13% at constant currency) with non-GAAP billings up 16% to US$164m (18%). Free cash flow increased 28% to US$181m and cash EBITDA grew 35% to US$49m. The US$2m operating profit for the quarter gives particular cause for celebration following consecutive operating losses of US$13m (Q316), US$33m (FY16) and US$25m (H117). Sophos shares were up 8% @290p in early trading today. Following its IPO in June 2015 @225p the company invested heavily in research and development to bring new products to market whilst changes to its billing model which shifted customers away from upfront capex fees and into recurring subscriptions have had an additional impact on its operations. Sophos also announced it will pay US$100m to acquire US malware protection firm Invincea (which recorded billings of US$13.1m in its last financial year) and integrate its machine learning threat detection technology into Sophos’ own product lines. We think that enhanced portfolio looks strong going forward and addresses a segment of the enterprise market which we expect to expand as companies look for greater automation and shift more of their cyber security provision and management into cloud-hosted services. Looks like Sophos is heading in the right direction.

I see this as good mid-term investment as we head into unchartered waters. Mid-teen % growth should underline the share performance

SOPH are mentioned today in Shares magazine, "What to do with your ARM cash": "Cyber security is a common theme that provides potential homes for ARM cash, with FTSE 250 pair Sophos (SOPH) and NCC (NCC) both popular choices among investment experts."

A large transaction of just under 2m shares went through this morning at 190p. The weight of that dump has been depressing the share price of late but now that it has taken place the price is rising again.

Much hyped tech area: anti-virus, internet security et al, but can't see much special about Sophos that makes it stand out, or even stand, lol. Been watching for goodly time, but simply doesn't seem to have anything wow or watch-this-space about it; so now taken it off my watch list.

Has underperformed FTSE250 Index and it's sub-sector which does not bode well imo.

That was a reference to Thursday's news that Citygroup had reduced its target price from 300 to 290p. This said it retained its Buy rating.

Well it seems from the results of the end of day auction that there is a seller in the market. What you see is the price going down during the day on low volume(even though there are more buys than sells) and then a lot of shares being sold in the auction. Having said that tonight's uncrossing price was above the closing price so this may be an indication that things could be about to turn. The weakness is basically down to market forces, is how I see it.

I thought results OK and guidance very encouraging, especially future cash generation, which had been previously criticised. HACK is well above its Feb low. Shares look inexpensive IMO especially given excellent medium term prospects. Mkt cap of £870m, wide geog spread, long established business, good management...what's not to like? Why short term weakness?

It's sector wide. The HACK etf which invests in Cyber security Co.s incl. SOPH is not far off 52wk low.

So why has the share price crashed from a peak of near 300p? The only thing I can think of is the patent infringement issue?
