and then there were one...

Any idea what sort of offer this consortium will (if) make.

At the start of all this I was expecting around 240p, swiftly revised down to 200p, then 210p, then 205p. What next...??? 190p...???

I suggest anything less than 200p would be not a good offer.

Pre-takeover news 150p-160p.

"07 October 2005

LONDON & REGIONAL PROPERTIES LIMITED ('L&R') WITHDRAWAL OF POSSIBLE OFFER FOR
SOMERFIELD PLC ('Somerfield')

L&R has decided not to proceed with an offer for Somerfield.

L&R reserves the right to make an offer with the agreement or recommendation of
the Somerfield board, or if the consortium consisting of Apax Partners Worldwide
LLP, Barclays Capital and the Tchenguiz Family Trust or any member of that
consortium (whether on their own or with any other person) or a third party
announces an offer for Somerfield, or following the announcement by Somerfield
of a 'whitewash' proposal or of a reverse takeover (as defined in The City Code
on Takeovers and Mergers)."

In other words, except in the (unlikely) event that Somerfield's directors beg and plead, they might make an offer but only if someone else does first.

Me too Bastide, I never got over selling Tricentrol too early years ago.

However, I don't like the look of the late trades.

I think the door is open all hours, but as long as ASDA is lurking in the background, I,for one, am going to stay in the shop. At least, and at last, this takeover is now getting exciting

According to "The Scotsman" today :-

Two-horse race for Somerfield

THE takeover battle for Somerfield is still a two-horse race, according to sources close to the deal. Speculation was rising last week that the consortium led by the Livingstone brothers had pulled out of the auction following a row with its bid partner, United Co-operatives.

Although it is unclear who remains in the consortium, the bid is still alive. The Takeover Panel has set a bid deadline of October 14.

Today's Observer talks of Apax pulling out (this is the same newspaper that told us on Sept. 4th. that Apax would announce its bid that week so beware of the reliability of this).

With just over 3 weeks for either consortium to make an offer for SOF or go away, whats the feeling on this ?

What is a fair price for SOF ? and if no one does make an offer, then can we expect to see the price drop back to the 1.50 level ?

it is a tempting CFD / SB play, or perhaps better as an option play if the price is likely to move more than 20% in either direction (up with bid, down with no bid) regardless of the decision.

thoughts ?

Hi Bigface
I looked in to mention that have called SOF a sell currently. They keep figures for all indices but not graphs. I find the site interesting and their predictions have a better than even success. I don't like the way that they are able to calculate on the prior day's results, but leave it up to the punter to second guess them for the best results. They can also change direction very quickly, nevertheless they have their use for me.
I am out of WBY currently. My CEY are performing well as are COB and I recently took profits in LLOY at 489 and waited for the fall to 469 before re-purchasing my holding. All this time bbullss had them as SELL/WAIT as they are still.

This site is probably more what you are looking for:

I am hoping that I will go to the Southampton Boat show this week to window shop
best regards to you and all

faxxer - with regard to next year's AGM, J von S's last words to me today were "See you next year". (!)

Recently I have been following the pronouncements of British Bulls (the people who always manage to buy at the low point and sell at the high) on my favourite shares. I found that they have Somerfield still as a hold despite delaring that there was heavy selling pressure today which formed a long black candlestick. They say that prices declined from open to close.

sharw: Not wanting to influence anyone I would say that there is an even chance that I will be at next year's agm.

xchef you told us in post 732 that the bid would be announced last weekend so why should we believe you when you say it will be 225p?

At today's AGM the Directors said the rules prevented them from adding to this morning's bid statement but when I suggested that this was a 'put up or shut up' notice I was not contradicted.

The AGM was one of the quietest for years, and nuggets of information were thin on the ground. Never mind - this year's goody bag consisted of a bottle of Australian reserve shiraz, 1kg SF basmati rice, a jar of SF white wine and mushroom sauce, a KS cake, a packet of KS fruit shortcake biscuits, a packet of SF sunflower seeds, a packet of SF pumpkin seeds, and a bunch of 12 roses.

This morning's sell-off seems to have reversed at 10.15, so the city still thinks there will be a bid.

Point taken but We've seen it soo many times before when there are more than one partie interested a bidding war begins and that will bring the price over and above the £210. mark imo.

xchef,

225? Any bid will be in the 205-210 range if you are lucky.

The reason for the selling is that although IMHO the bad trading figures just announced increase the chances of the shareholders accepting any bid, the bidders are either likely now to bid less or not be pushed up as high as they otherwise would.

The directors will be sweating - they need the bid if they are to be millionaires - as faaxer points out in his excellent post, their is no cash to be made from a self-break up. There is no way they will be able to trade somefield to riches!

sharw: regrettably I will not be attending this year's agm as I no longer have a beneficial interest in the company. If I did attend I might ask the company how it has sailed on for five years with all of management's efforts, only to arrive at a company sale which will realise little more than its asset value. I would congratulate the directors on their careful accumulation of share options while failing to increase the company's turnover. I fail to see how the company can recommend a takeover from an asset stripper when it could equally admit defeat and do the same thing to itself. I don't think the share options would kick in then. Ooh, I hope I haven't answered my own question. Surely there are some principled people left in this country?
