Top Barrow pub and hotel gets green light to press on with £300k expansion

7 April 2016 12:31PM
A PLUSH bar and hotel is set to expand, creating new jobs and a boost for the Furness economy.

The Duke of Edinburgh will increase the number of rooms it has by building into empty attic space in the adjacent Cooke's Building, which is the home of Signal Film and Media.
Bosses say they are ready to start work on the £300k scheme immediately - but that plans are on hold while bosses from the Big Lottery Fund give their approval.

The fund was involved in a major revamp of the building ahead of it reopening in 2011.

Phil Simpson, director of Lancaster Brewery, which owns the Duke, said: "It's great the plans have been approved; I find Barrow Council to be very positive when it comes to developments which will improve the area's economy.

"But it is also very frustrating. We have a team of 12 men who could have started work yesterday. We have all the necessary agreements in place apart from the nod from the Big Lottery and that's proving very difficult."

The hotel scene in Barrow is booming as investors look to capitalise on the influx of workers due to significant expansion at BAE systems.

A huge 240-room portable Snoozebox hotel is to be built at Woodbridge Haven, in Cavendish Dock Road in Barrow.

Meanwhile, The Crofters in Holbeck Park Avenue has been converted into the Crofters Lodge with 11 luxury en-suite bedrooms.

Down the A590 in Ulverston, a new Premier Inn is to be built at a cost of £5m.

Councillor John Murphy is Barrow Council's portfolio holder for leisure and toursim.

He said: "The economy of Barrow is slowly developing and changing for the better and it is lovely to see the investment which is being made in the town.

"The Duke of Edinburgh offers visitors and people coming to the town to work a first-class service. It is excellent to see redundant buildings being reused and renewed in the Abbey Road area."

Beancounters don't always make good businessmen. The main plank of any business is sales, without sales you haven't got anything to work with. No doubt the shareholders will eventually be told the story, usually at the same time the hat is passed around again. But with the share price destroyed it would seem more likely that a cheapo management buy-out will happen? It seemed a good idea and the new managers seemed to have a grip on execution, but evidently it's gone wrong again.

O'Murchu is an accountant relatively young and unlikely to have blotted his copy book in that manner. He was the cfo i think.

worth a gamble. My take however is that they have run out of funds and extent of poor trading has been masked by previous ceo.

bought a lot of these today. Either there has been a massive theft or much more likely the ceo has resigned to make a bid.

Risk /reward enormous on both sides!

"Fully executable offering" with hindsight sounds like, "we now have all the stock we need, now we need sales".

The NEC is taking the Executive Chairman role on a part-time basis. Will O'Murchu continue to draw salary while he hangs around for six months?

From November 2015: Lorcán Ó Murchú, Chief Executive, commented: "2015 has been a year of transition for Snoozebox. We have transformed our product into a diverse and fully executable offering capable of deployment at a wide range of events, supported by a growing semi-permanent business. We are confident in the long-term opportunities in our markets and our ability to profitably scale the business."
I know 6 months is a long time in the stockmarket not to mind politics but you gotta love the disconnect between forecasts and reality.

I am quite pleased to know about a "diverse and fully executable offering" now is so that I may avoid one in future.

What will the review say?
Not looking good. Still has a £5m mkt cap and any cash won't see it's way back to shareholders IMO.

I almost invested in this one a few years back but they just didn't seem to be able to reach the scale necessary to make it profitable.
Sad to see it on the brink now as it seemed like a really good idea.

I used to like this one Nick Rubens, even made a small profit before I headed for the exit. I liked the apparent high margins until I realised that those could easily be wiped out by event sites raising their fee's. I liked the long term workers accommodation for the older boxes past their best, and then one day I noticed a stack of similar boxes in an industrial yard, plainly tired previous accommodation boxes from someone else's failed venture.

I concluded that the main value in a business of this type is the salesmen and deal makers, because there is plenty of capacity out there. Perhaps a contract to run a temporary military base/refugee camp, might be the making of snoozebox? I hear that Europe is paying $6 billion Danegeld to the Turks, perhaps 5% of that will be turned into help for refugee's? Maybe worth a phone call to some Turkish apparatchik?
