the delay in the results were flagged but punters are still surprised and sell when late.

Nothing that bothers me - just pre result selling on a rare spike in SMG imo.

I don't think the delay is anything ominous. I think Hanover needed a bit more time to take a good look at what they had taken on and, whether the results are good, average or indifferent it will be the outlook and forward planning that will have more impact IMO.

The fall is surprising given that SMG held firmly above 70p while the Dow, FTSE etc tumbled a few weeks back. In amongst all the volatility SMG was reassuringly steady.

So why the fall this week?

I feel this is much to do with end of year. Some people nursing losses have decided to write them off, others are prepared to take the chance to sell and offset and trying to buy back after 30 days. All IMHO of course but it is a reasoned argument that reassures me anyway :0)

Is the delay expected to be as a result of good or bad news? People seem bored of waiting - that said, I have seen situations like this before when people bail, price dips and then rises steeply into strong news - patience is a virtue as they say...my investment here is academic, I topsliced a long time ago so the holding is now essentially free...happy to see where the ride takes us

Its probably worth remembering that Hanover paid more than the present share price to get a chunk of their holding, and they know rather more than we do about the company. And there is a yield of over 4% while we wait for the real action to start.

Also, this share has fallen somewhat over at least the last couple of years, and with the end of the tax year looming, I suspect that a number of punters are realising their losses to help their CGT position. I've made a slightly fuller post along these lines (end of tax year) on the ABU thread a few minutes ago. As I said there, this familiar scenario in the second half of March can often throw up some interesting buying opportunities if you keep your eyes open!

short term wooseyness from punters reading UTV results - the big buyers at this level will be back when they think they've flushed the bored imo.

An interesting comparison for you here - these are the charts where Hanover have taken stakes:

Take a look - Hanover started buying in July on RNO

Thet started buying shares in SPT in August:

They started buying in July 03 in FOUR:

They started buying CSLT in September:

They started buying SMG just two months ago:

And their worst performer - Scapa, they started buying in July, only up 25% in 8 months:

-------------

SCPA and SMG look the most interesting to me from here - Hanover bought into PLM yesterday so I suspect that's another that's about to get the wonder treatment.

Must admit to having sold and taken profits. I just get the feeling this'll be a longer-term job than other turnarounds and is more likely to be subject to trading negatives than other Hanover jobbies. Probably completely wrong (as I was with CSLT), and maybe I'll get back in if the price continues to drift down.
