14/8/2005 17:03 | TELEWEST TO BENEFIT...THATS WHERE I'M PUTTING MY MONEY! EU moves to break BSkyB's football monopoly - report LONDON (AFX) - British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC's domination of the rights to Premiership League football matches may be threatened by moves by the European Commission, the Observer reported. The commission's competition directorate have told the league that under the next broadcasting deal, starting in 2007, no one station should show more than half the live matches screened. According to the paper Sky fears that may prompt many of their subscribers to switch providers, while the football league reckons it could slash their 1.6 mln stg TV income. The commission meanwhile wants to end Sky's monopoly and improve conditions for consumers and rival operators such as NTL, Telewest and Setanta. amy.brown@afxnews.co | maestro. |
